I know I'm not the only one who found out the hard way that my new 3gs no longer fits in the iphone dock in the armrest. I read a few threads here and there but couldn't find any confirmed solution so I tried this cable and adapter solution an it actually work perfect!. I ordered a charge converter and extension cable from CableJive: Jive with iPod and iPhone/ which allowed me to plug the converter into the connector down in the armrest and then I plugged the extension cable into that which runs out to my iphone which just sits in the cupholder or something. It now charges and has the full integration again just like I had with my original iPhone.

I've been a vortex member for years so figured I'd join up here and share for anyone interested. Hope this helps!

Well they really had to.....the old standard was based on firewire specs and firewire is on the way out. All the new devices now use the usb standard so will be much more universal from here on.

To be fair to Apple the iPods have supported charging over USB since 2004 and they did announce that firewire charging would be removed at some point. I'd say that VW had ample time to do something about their iPod connector - it would only take a few small components that could sit inline to the connector.
