iPhone 3G too big for dock - R32OC

The new iPhone 3G is too big to fit the dock on the 2008- (or newer) MKVs, which is bad news for those with a cool new iPhone for the OEM dock.

I my self got a iPhone classic (which fits), but tried my neighbours 3G in the dock... it didn't even fit in to it! 2008- MKVs have their dock in the handrest, but I'll guess it won't fit older MKV iPod docks becuase they probably have the same dimensions.

The dock comes in the biggest (without adapters) size, to fit the 30 & 60gb iPod, but there are also adapters to plug in for Nano iPods etc. Took the whole armrest thing off, to see if there's any kind of way to make it bigger but didn't find anyway to do so.

so bad news for iPhone 3G owners with a iPod dock in their MKV

Eh? My 1st Gen iphone fits in my armrest dock, even with the leather case I've got on it. The only thing is that the armrest wont go right down.

Oops just read that the 08 dock is different - sos fella.

Even if it did fit it wouldn't charge the 3G iPhone as Apple have removed the 12v charging option.

the 1st gen iPhone fits even if you wrap tons of paper around it, but the 3G iPhone is a few clicks bigger than the 1st gen and that's why it wont fit in the dock. Same shit on all MKV docks, even if it's 2005 or 2008, but it's on a different place on the newer cars.

and as I've understood it, the dock doesn't charge the iPod/iPhone via the car battery, but via the headunit with the same way as it does when you connect your phone to the computer, the USB plug. But, I could be wrong...

I read a post on another forum where a guy had a 2007 Ed30 GTI and his 3G iPhone didn't charge when it was in the dock. Like the 1st gen iPhone it said 'unsupported accessory' when it was docked but unlike the 1st gen iPhone it wouldn't charge.

well, let's hope VW and Apple come along better next time... as for other companies such as Pionneer. Pioneer headunit only support iPhones/Touch with firmware 1.1.2 or older, which nobody have nowadays, because Apple won't release their software to Pioneer.

I can't see VW doing anything with the iPod interface now that there is the MDI interface which gives you full control of the iPod from touch screen sat nav.

3g iphone will not charge in a Bose speaker set either(unlike ipod).
