I am interested in buying an MKIV R32 but am apprehensive about the reliability. This would be my first VW, and I have heard some horrible stories about VW. From what I hear though the build quality of the MKIV R32's are better than most VW's because they were built in Germany. For reference I would be trading up from an Acura TSX. Any suggestions, opinions, or help would be appreciated. Let me know what your experiences are as far as repairs, unexpected surprises, maintenance, etc. Thanks!!

Well I use mine everyday and (touch wood) it has never let me down and nothing has gone wrong with it.There is a buyers guide on here if you do a search for it.
The one thing I would say to anybody thinking of buying one is to get the timing chains checked from some one with Vagcom as there is a issue with some engines that has come to light just recently.
R32's were not built in Germany either bit the quality of the R is excellent

I did read the buyers guide on this site, and found it very helpful. I am just curious what owners experiences have been. So I am misinformed that they were built in Germany? I read an article from a car review magazine that said only 5,000 2004 R32's were produced in Germany and then shipped to the United States. (That is where I am) Is that incorrect? Have you owned other VW's in addition to the R32, that were not mechanically sound?? THanks for your response.

well I have only had 2 VW's - The R32 which I had had for just over 1yr and GTi Turbo which i owned for 4 yrs and covered over 125,000 miles with very little problems, nothing bad happened to it at all.
Not sure on where the R's that are in USA were made but I think there were 5000 or so and they all have a numbered plaque.
We have only around 2600 MKIV R332's sold new here in UK.

I am sure there is a way to find country of manufacture from the chassis number of the car.

I read (can't remember where) that there were initially something like ~2500 launched in the UK but when they sold so well they made another ~5000 for the UK. I'm sure there must be more than 750 in the UK, in fact I'd say there are probably more than 2500 too.

There are 1847 members on the forum right now and I think you could reasonably say that of those, maybe 1200 would be from the UK (a completely uneducated guess, but what the heck...).
Are half the R owners in the UK on the forum? Who knows.
Does anyone have anything more reliable to go on?
