Default selling private car with private reg - but want to retain private reg - how?

selling private car with private reg - but want to retain private reg

      what are the options?

      - go down dvla and retain reg and wait for new v5c to arrive with original reg and then sell (is what i can only think of)

      or are there alternative options?

You can sell the car with a contract that guy retains number plate for you, get a watertight contract written up and knock the £105 off the final figure and give him 3 months to do it, state that he has no holding over the plate... this is what i did when i sold my M3, and it worked fine...

I have a private plate and was wondering if i were to part exchange my current car can a garage transfer my plate onto my new car so when i pick up the new car the plate is already on it, this would save me having to wait for the V5 to arrive in my name before i could pay the DVLA a visit.

If part-exchanging then any decent garage should sort it all out for you.

The only problem is timing the insurance - a reg plate can only be associated with one car at a time, so your insurer will not allow any overlap, even by a few minutes. So, be careful that if there is any delay in your new car being ready, then you will probably be out of insurance on your old car as you will have arranged in advance ( in order to get road tax ) for the new insurance to kick in.

Apart from that, put your feet up and let the garage take the hassle

      hi thanks
as dvla office is near me, i'll rather avoid the postal system

R32DOM, thanks. i was thinking about this, but it's alot of trust and onerous on the new buyer to do so at a good timing etc.

i've retained my reg before, but can't remember what i filled out.

if i went down your route option, when the new buyer recieves his new v5 with the private plate and then goes to retain the number plate for original owner, does he just fill in name and address for retention person?

I went down the dvla office on a friday afternoon handed over all paperwork plus the £80 (swapping to another car iirc it's £105 to retain) received tax disc and mot on the thursday with the old reg on, v5 came the following monday iirc so 6 working day turnaround then just screwed the old plates back on and new owner collected.

I personally wouldn't trust a new seller to return it.

I always pay the £105, then i can put it straight onto a car at any time... There's a from to fill out to retain it, just make sure he puts your name as the Nominee so basically he's filling it out to be retained is his name but with you as a nominee. He then sends once he's signed the declaration...
