Last winter and again this winter my mkiv leather seats have started going grey and blotchy. This grey deposit rubs off with my hand and wipes off easily with a damp cloth. About every six months, just before winter and early summer I clean and treat them with Autoglym. Every now and then I use leather wipes that contain carnauba wax. I don't think it gets damp but its almost like mould you might expect to see caused by dampness. I only really use it at the weekends and it doesn't seem to affect the actual sitting area of the front seats. Anyone else have/had anything similar or know of a way of stopping it as its unsightly and makes the leather look shite!![]()
I'd say clean the leather seats with hot water, shampoo (johnson's baby shampoo believe it or not), and a Bug remover sponge.
Scrub lightly all over, and then rinse off all the bubbles with a damp hot clean cloth.
Repeat again to throughly remove all the crap and oils that have built up on the leather's surface.
Once it's all dried off see if the leather would need a very light treating of leather feed.
I personally don't recommend AutoGlym or Meguirs leather stuff. It's far too rich and oily for my taste.
I use something Called Tanners Leather Feed. I've also heard that Gliptone leather milk is good (but I've not used or come across this before).
It's better to treat leather if it's HOT, so I bang out the hairdrier and heat up the leather before lightly applying leather feed.
Once it's on, leave it for 30mins or longer, and then wipe it all down with a clean soft cloth.
If it's oily feeling, I'll wipe down with a damp warm cloth, just to get rid of the excess leather feed.
I've been using the above method ever since I've had my car, and it still looks fresh and smooth.
I suspect the patches are from the leather feed wipes you are using, with a combination of the weather/humidity this time of year..
Let us know how u get on.
