got a beetle 1.8t at the moment but fancy a step up in power. drove a mkv r32 at the weekend and loved it, but not 100% sure its worth the bug and 16k!

i only use my car at weekends and the occasional evening as i work away a fair bit in the week and have a new shape vw caddy tdi for work so mpg is not an issue, but equally the car is a luxury as its not used for a commute etc

however, i've also seen a 53/04 golf r32 for sale at a volkswagen specialist for 14k, i'm just wondering if i drive the hour or so to take a test drive how will it compare with the mk5? but the 7k saving over the mk5 sounds much more sensible and leaves £££ in the bank

also what do i need to look at with regard the mk4 r32, i've heard about a fan issue? anything else i need to check?

i've always been into old bugs and new bugs, especially my 1.8t, but i find the scene and the forums for them very dull and have been very impressed by this forum and the atmosphere and knowledge

theres not masses between the 4 and the 5 other than interior and exterior trims and shape, engine wise theyre pretty similar.

i'm a bug fan too, owned loads including a newbie and even now still go to aircooled meets

what to look for, well if your getting it from a dealer you'll have warranty. but look for wear on the seat bolsters, scuff damage to the underside of the front bumper, the fans as youve mentioned, check the side skirts - that they bonded on well and basically the paint

other than that theyre pretty bullitproof you'll find so its just common sense

Was the MK5 you drove manual or DSG? If it's DSG you want you will have to go for a mk5, as it was never available on the mk4 R32 in the UK.

Otherwise, save yourself a whole lot of money and go for a mk4 R32. With some tweaks to the ECU and suspension, it will go and handle just as well as the mk5. The mk4 R32 has fully independent rear suspension, just like the mk5. Fit some uprated anti-roll bars and a fast road haldex controller and off you go!

As for which one looks better, that's purely down to personal taste!

mm! Mine had the 6463 update done back in July and has performed flawlessly ever since. But if you get an aftermarket remap (e.g. Revo) done, you don't need 6463.

the mk5 was manual and dsg does not really appeal to me anyway

the mk4 has the '6463' software upgrade & a Milltek exhaust system, the resonated version, as well as full leather etc

i brought mine from a vw dealer 10months ago it was up for £18.5K managed to get it for just under £17k wiv a few extras so id say £14k from a dealer is v.good and u get the 12 months warranty, and with the mill exhasut which cost me bout £1.2k so sounds good to me mate! :151:
