Thread: caught speeding in portugal !

for a start i must say i was impresseed with the r and i "only"regret that i did not had a camera ready at that moment!
so, went down to spain and Portugal on holidays and toke the r and i loved every min ov it. on the day i was leaving already on the motorway and just b4 i cross the border(portugal/spain) i was crusing(160kph) and at the same time i was passing a subaru sti just enter the motorway and got stuck behind me so i said to my mate; he whants to race me! but i just stayed on the same speed then, after a long time behind me he suddenly just toke of very fast and on that moment i looked at my mate and said no no no im not gonna let a subaru leaving me behind like that! so i whent after him and it did not take long i was passing him too, by this time i was doin 250kph and he was behind then 270,.275 and the subaru cut of and when i said to my mate that he was left behind and laughing i saw 2 blue&red lights flashing oh noooo!!
i was gutted! i thought i was gonna loose my licence but they where 2 young police officer's and the driver told me that he had lot's of fun and was amazed that he caught a "GTI" doing 281kph and that i was the fastest driver he ever caught speeding !
lol i said, that was a privelege and that my car it's not a GTI.
so, after spending half an hour looking at my car he let me of with a 500euro fine pay'd on the act. not to bad as i thought that was it i would loose my licence,pay a big fine and knowing that my girfriend would then drive all the way back!!

ps: i had enough hints to know it was a police car but...

281kph is 174mph . Is your R32 tuned?

well as far as i know in portugal you can get points aswel but bcoz the car is not portuguese reg and i have a jersey licence and there's not such a thing as points in jersey then you just pay a fine there and then or they take ur licence&car!

the cameras are not really a problem but if they stop you then that's what will happen

they have points in spain same basis as back in uk.if you get caught by a copper 9 times out of 10 your gonna get an on the spot fine which gets put in there pocket.the police here are so bent its untrue,if your on any reg appart from spanish the worse you would get would be a cash fine its easyer for them.

I'm confused, I have a MkV R32 and i thought the top speed was about 154mph.

by the way after chating with the copers they kind of 'slip' and they told me that a speeding camera/radar will only reads up to 250kph! so if you doin more than that you'l be fine lol

it's quite funny when on the autobhan and as soon you see the sign everyone speeds up but then not long after everyone is puting on the brakes!
when i got caught speeding at the time they flashed me it was a very long down hill and i was far from the end of it still. somehow i think it could have reached slightly higher speed

On the Autobahn on our Euro trip in July I managed GPS 164mph after 3 days of trying, and I am pretty confident that it would be impossible to get 174. I had miles of open Autobahn, GPS speed o'meter and a Miltek and Induction kit.

my mate has 2 r32's mk4 and they are 100% standard 1black 5 door&1 dbp 3 door and we have tested both of them to the very limit on the motoway
in the black it reached 162mph(speedo) and in the blue it reached 170mph ! dont know how to explain but one was much faster than the other and he has tryed again with the black on and 162 it was.
when i was last in germany i toke this astra vxr and we both were doin 172mph and did not had the exhaust on yet!
ps; maybe there's a monster under the bonet of my car and i dont now it!!

Not doubting the claims,but a pic of the speedo would be convincing..and dangerous..

Friend of mine had an old fiesta pop and got it up to 110mph indicated on the speedo, it wasn't actually doing 110mph though it was a 1.1 pop it wasn't capable of hitting 100 mph but if you think that in my old 172 an indicated 35mph was actually 27 mph on a speed gun then you can see even at low speeds speedos can be out.

R32 is limited to 155, take the limiter off and you would probably hit 160ish with the wind behind you on a downhill given enough road, what the speedo says is irrelevant really and you could well have an indicated 174mph but not be anywhere near that speed.

Interesting point, if the radar only reads up to 250 kph how were you clocked at 281 kph?
