Did it myself today.
Very straightforward to do, if you can manage an engine oil change, then you can do this too !
Don't know why people charge stupid money for this job, and why they moan how awkward it is.

Only thing I would say is that the guides which are on the forums on how to do this fail to say one thing and that is you need a new sealing washer:
02D525655 - Sealing washer
Or if you're anal, get a new haldex sump plug which comes with the washer:
02D525729 - Haldex Sump plug

Other useful part numbers are:

02D525558A - Haldex Oil Filter and cap
G052175A1 - Haldex Oil cartridge

You also need a tool too to remove the oil filter cap, which you can get easily from G&S or any motor factors

Cheers

PS - Part numbers are from ETKA for a MK4 R32.

Interesting! It's posts like this that make me want to have a go myself.

Where about on the car is it? Do you need to get the rear up in the air, or the front.

The tool - is it any cheaper at GSF or is this about the going rate?

I havnt done this myself (generally get it done along with some mods and blag the garage to throw it in free lol) - its at the back end though where the haldex etc is. im not sure if the car has to be level for the oil drain etc so you may need a ramp. the tool looks like a 12 point socket so im pretty sure you could find something that would do the job cheaper. if youre one for having the proper tool for the job i believe around £30 is the going rate.

Our R is going for the 40k service on Friday - the garage are lifting around £70 for the privilege of doing the haldex oil and service but if I can do it next time, I will as the warranty is only good until August this year.

This could be the big 'gotcha' for me as i'm a driveway, axle stand and trolly jack kinda guy although getting the whole thing in the air on axle stands is possible. I'll start searching for a how-to.

if you do a search there was one on here not so long ago. ill have a look see if i can find it. £70 isnt that bad i dont think. the haldex kit is around £30-40 and the tool around £30 so for a one off youre best having a garage do it. Now if you can get away with a £2-3 12 point socket or spanner it starts looking cheaper to do it yourself. and then if you are planning on doing it regularly its a no brainer. once youve done it the once and know whats what its a pretty quick and easy job from what ive read. Ill be doing mine myself once the service contract is over. and like everything else ill prob change it twice as often as recommended.

I like your thinking!

The tool looks quite intricate and i'm sure there is a good reason why it exists. I suppose pictures won't do the job justice, you have to be lying under the car up to the eyes in grease to appreciate it

Hi guys

I definately recommend buying the tool, as that is what makes the job so easy
Otherwise the filter is a pig to get to, and improvising will just make a bodge of it.
I paid £20 from GSF.
And after selling the R, you could sell the tool to and get your money back so its a recession proof investment

As for location, you need to jack the back of the car up and put it on axle stands. The haldex unit is located near the rear diff.
As for quotes, I've had varying quotes from £110 from Storm developments to £250 quid from VW.

Part prices are £33.35 all in for the filter and oil.
So quite a substantial saving, plus peace of mind, if you can be bothered

a couple of good guides there - neither are the ones i was thinking of though. the VAG one makes the plug look easy to get at with an improvised tool aswell. I dont suppose there isnt any reason why people couldnt share the tool if they live close by. maybe make a post asking if anybody has one you could borrow locally. At £20 though its something worth having to do the job right though and when it comes to mine ill end up buying the proper stuff anyway for the amount of times ill prob do it.
