Afternoon all,

I've not owned an R32 before, in fact I'm coming straight from driving a classic Mini(!) so I was wondering if someone might be able to answer a couple of newbie questions I have:

I'm gonna be picking up my new mkIV R32 this evening which was described to me by the trader as 100% standard. However when I went to view it last night it said Milltek accross the top of each tailpipe, which obviously means it's had a Milltek system fitted. Would I be right in thinking that that's at least the 'cat back' and possibly more, and would I also be right in thinking that cat back means everything from the cat backwards, excluding the cat(s)? And finally, how is this going to affect me/the car (other than add £60 to my insurance premium)?

Also I felt that the engine was a bit 'disappointing' around 2k-3k rpm when I test drove it so I'm fairly sure it's not had the 6463 update or been remapped. I live in Oxford and was wondering if anyone knows of any local(ish) friendly VW dealers that would check this for me - I guess a small fee would be involved?

OK that's it for now, thanks for any advice you've got.

Cheers,
Nick

Hi Nick

sounds like you know what you are doing you will love the car and having the Milltek already fitted is a bonus that will save you neary £500 havin it done later ... If you spend any time on here it sort of becomes compulsory after a while.

I think the dealers should do the 6463 update for free if you chat them up a bit, im sure someone on here will know who to see in your area

Your first day in the car will be awesome, i still remember mine lol. Just get down to Tesco and fill it up with 99 again and again and enjoy it

Paul

Welcome to the forum Nick...The cats are separate from the back box so it may not have Miltek cats fitted..the cats are located more to the front of the car just off the manifold pipe..also if it has a silencer just before the back box it has a resonated exhaust on it ...if no silencer it's non resonated...which means it will be extra loud...which is not a bad thing....:xD

Your pretty well placed for VW specialists, Storm Developments are near Reading and you have Stealth Racing up in Southam. As to VW dealers your local one should do the update free, if your lucky.

OK thanks for that guys I'll have a look underneath when I get it home, checking for a forward silencer/resonator and, I guess, some branding on the cats to determine if they're Milltek. When I drove it yesterday it didn't seem very loud so I think I'll probably find it has the resonator.

I'm also guessing that, as the car is an 03reg and has done 53k miles it would be well out of warranty - should I really still be able to get the update for free? That's if they admit it needs doing at all, or even that they know what I'm on about...

If you play it right with the dealer they should do it for free. maybe combine it with an MOT so they are getting some of your money anyway?!?

If you phone up either VW UK or a VW stealer and ask for servicing, give them your Reg number it should show up in the warranty history of the car if the 6463 update has been done. The stealer can put it on the computer and connect it to their main centre and see if it has the latest software on, as I did, got mine done for £20 plus VAT, better than the £40 plus VAT they wanted to charge. PS welcome to the forum, got to say I've only been on here a few weeks and you couldnt wish to meet a better bunch on here so much to learn and so much money to be spent lol, ask any question and more than one person will know the answer.

Hi and welcome to the forum

The Milltek cat back system is a welcome addition to any car especially the R32,gives a nice throaty sound without being excessive

The 6463 update should show up on the service history with the dealers as previously mentioned

Another good way of clearing that flat spot is to go for a remap :

The Custom-Code Phase 1 will see approx 255-260bhp and 245-255ft/lb

This gives better drivability and throttle response which will put a smile on your face
