Out of interest, why can't the two things be used together?

Nelson thanks for the offer I thinks its a good buy. I have noticed that you said the bluetooth and the media-in can't be connected both to the RNS 510, why? Will my Ipod battery be charged with the media -in connector?
i think you would struggle to find an interface that doesnt charge the ipod whilst in use these days. i could be wrong but it seems stupid not to charge an ipod that is likely to be in the car for days. I have pioneer stuff but my ipod is in my car and stays there most of the time so id be annoyed if it didnt really.

Apparently they do work together. Look at post 12 on [ame="http://vwnavi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9507"]this thread[/ame]. I couldn't see why they wouldn't work together as the BT uses the phone input on the back of the 510 and MDI uses AUX.
And yes, it'll charge the iPod.
The original VW one may not depending on what iPod you have. It'll work for anything bar the new Touch, Nano and Classic since they only charge using USB and the original VW kit charges using the firewire interface which has been removed from the newer iPods.
