Just been watching the news on this. What are your opinions?

Although it does seem a good idea, i still think it's another money making scam. Far too many idiots do it, and I really can't see the cops stopping every single individual for it.
Same should apply to hogging the 3rd lane or lighting and being distracted by a lit fag or whatever. Also I can't see drivers sticking in lane 1 than spending every 2min over taking a lorry than back into lane 1. It's just long.

How topical after the Motorway Driving thread.

Just another way the scrounging parasites can make money in my opinion.

Just one thing that puzzles me though, what is determined as lane hogging ? Because if your in the middle lane comfortably overtaking cars will that be classed as lane hogging ?

If you can move over to the inside lane you should be doing it. Obviously If you closing in fast to to a vehichle in the inside lane then it would be an overtaking manourvere. It's a case of using common sense and courtesy -use your mirrors, try to be aware of other cars and try not to hold people up who want to drive faster then you. You're not a policeman and it's not your job to govern the speed of traffic.
I have a parent who insists on driving in the middle lane because they don't like being overtaken by lorries. I say well don't use the motorway then!!! Thank god they're frightened and  don't use the motorway very often

hogging??? The definition of hogging is as follows:
  • Keep or use all of (something) for oneself in an unfair or selfish way.
  • (with reference to a ship) Bend or become bent convex upward along its length.

1. I pay for road tax, therefore how can I "hog"? That's like saying if I park in the same spot every night, I'm hogging the parking space.
2. If we ignore the "ship" part... We can see the government are the ones that are hogging.... i.e. bent.

I'll continue to hog the middle lane.  I do it at 80mph so can't see them giving me a ticket for hogging...

The only time it can be policed is if you're driving slower than the traffic in lane 1 (which never happens for me) or if all 3 lanes are empty and you're in the middle lane (which doesn't happen for me as my closing speed to lane 1 is normally 20+ mph so there's always traffic coming)

I've seen coppers sit in the middle or outside lane at 70mph so that no one dares overtake, what are they going to do issue tickets to themselves.

There's far too many people still driving on mobile phones and heavily speeding in 30mph limits.  I'd much rather they concentrated on saving lives.

+1 for the above

I usually cruise at about 80 in the middle lane, if I approach someone going slower then me I move out to the 3rd lane then back in again..... Rinse and repeat till you reach your destination. If that makes me a hogger then so be it.... and similarly if you approach me in the middle lane and you want to get past then move to the outside lane till your past me!!

Screw lane 1... that's for trucks, old people and hybrids lol

Mobile phone use and tailgating is much more dangerous IMO and rather they dealt with those people harshly. The number of young ladies I see on the motorway texting is criminal.

Did you ever see the Ford Ka veer into the central reservation on one of those Police, Camera, Action type programs?

Perfectly clear road ahead and no one to the left.  Just drove straight into the barrier. Quelle Surprise, out stepped of the wreckage a typical peroxide airhead.  Turns out she was using her phone and over reacted when the car steered toward the barrier.  Hopefully her dice with death will teach her a much needed lesson.

As for middle lane hogging, well, it'd be nice if works but the knowledge it's now a fineable offense will be enough for most people.

I can see both sides.  A lot of people occupy the middle lane because the gaps between lorries in Lane 1 are too short to bother moving in and out of.  However, many a time I have joined a motorway and found ML dawdlers crawling along with 100s of yards of empty lane 1 ahead of them.  So I have to peel out into Lane 3 and then back into Lane 1 again.  These people are bloody vacant, ignorant and totally unaware of their own surroundings.

Many people just don't get that driving on Britains roads is a social activity and all about sharing the same road space, irrespective of who pays what amount of tax, or any tax at all.  There are just waaaaay to many SARPs on Britain's roads who think THEY are right and everyone else is wrong.  Until attitudes change, the misery of British motoring will never change.  And I say 'British' because it's only Brits who have such ridiculous attitudes to driving.  I've driven in most of Europe, America, Australia, Hong Kong and I've never seen such levels of appalling manners and selfishness as I see here.

If Brits ever drive on Italian Autostradas, they'll be picking fights with Italians left right and centre.  When in Rome.....

It's nothing but a money making scheme.  If you're doing less than the speed limit in the middle lane and not moving over then you deserve the fine.  If you've got your foot down then there's no problem.

This has been long overdue, one of the worst habits of British drivers....  Should be easy for the Police to enforce too, if you havnt pulled over when there is a reasonable gap whatever speed you are doing, expect a ticket.

I already think of it as the LOZ law.   Get them Lozzers moving over ;)

Ironically, the British penal system did used to furnish the guilty with death for their crimes!  And public stoning for more minor crimes.

I truly believe soft touch policing is the main cause of this country's 'don't give a rats' attitude.  People, ('yooofs' especially) no longer fear or respect the Police.

They would certainly fear and respect this guy's method of policing :)

Sere if the motorway was involed on a driving test
Personally i think the roads(motorways) would be alot smoother to drive & not congested so much.
As it has been highlighted tym & tym again. Basic manners &  alertness would make your drive a pleasure instead horror/disgust

Common sense is key here. If you're going slow and there's space in lane one, than move over.

I just don't see how the police are going to fine thousands of motorists who do this on a daily basis!

edited that for you.
Doesnt matter how fast your going if there is space in lane 1 use it. Use the middle and outside lanes for overtaking just like you would a single lane road !

Tell that to the police going to an emergency, they'll tell you it's dangerous and inconvenient.

Maybe, just maybe I'll Bill the government for excessive wear on my chassis components due to excessive pulling in and out of lanes! Haha
Seriously though, this will be really hard for the police to justify their actions for fining people.
If you are driving on a motorway with no-one else on it what difference does it make what lane your in?
If your doing 60 in lane 3 on a motorway in moderately busy traffic with clear and obvious places to move over then maybe you deserve a refresher test or DAT course, not £100 fine.
They need to re educate drivers not think the attitude is 'let's charge them'

Its a good point. Having driven over into Germany a couple of times the standards are great. Everyone cracks on in a disciplined, fast and safe way. You come back through the tunnel and its back to the same old sh1t!

Middle lane hogging is irritating but im not sure how they would police it.  3 points seems a bit harsh for perhaps not moving over at first convenience.  I think motorway signs or a police educational chat would be better.(and at the very worst a fine) .. id be inclined to think its a money spinner (or a new road tax).

The only way i can see it being policed is via video evidence and court.

When does queuing in traffic become tailgating?

Doesnt sound well thought out to me.

Another typical money making scheme for the government!!!!!
I hope they do put the money to repairing our roads, we pay a ridiculous amount of road tax on our cars....
And I am sick and tired of swerving pot holes every 10 metres....
They should make middle lane hoggers do community service and fill in the potholes😄
