Afternoon,

I have a 2006 r32 with 76k on the clock. The dsg gearbox was serviced at 42k.

From yesterday the front end has been making a grinding noise. At lower speeds and gears the grinding is pretty loud then kind of goes quiet as i pick up speed. Do you think this is the gearbox?

The sound seems to be coming from the left hand side of the car and not the left?

Will this cost me a lot of money to put right like I have read on other websites? Any1 recommend where I get it looked at? I live in warrington, North West.

Cheers

I appreciate I say this a lot but the first thing to check is that the noise is not coming from a stone stuck between the brake disc and the backing plate. I had this a few times and the noise it makes gives the impression something major is wrong.

It's easy to get paranoid with the DSG. When you get the gringing noise at low speed nudge the gearbox into neutral to see if the noise disappears or remains. If it remains its unlikely to be the gearbox.

Mate, I used a company called A1 Premier Transmissions to rebuild my DSG as a warranty claim. Unfortunately they are not local to you as they are in Bedford, but they will pick your car up and trailer it to and from their garage. They are one of the only places I know that will remove, strip and rebuild a DSG. I dealt with a guy called Dave and would strongly recommend them.

When i put the car into neutral the noise stops. The car had it's last dsg oil change 5 years ago. I think it is the gearbox

How much does it cost to fix? will the whole gearbox need replacing or just part?

Does sound like the gearbox if it goes away when freewheeling. VW don't specify a time to service the DSG, only that it's done every 40k miles so that's unlikely to be the cause.

No point in speculating, best just to get it looked at and take it from there.

Dont go to VW in Warrington what ever you do. Customer service is non existent. My Mrs took her Borra there for a simple service and had nothing but problems which I won't go into here. I would recommend going to Awesome GTI a specialist not too far from Warrington that have a good reputation and will be cheaper.

Just had a technician from green flag look at it. From what it sounds like he seems to think it is a gearbox bearing problem?

Is this really bad? How much money we talking to resolve?

Cheers
