I bought a 1.0 2001 polo for my son about this time last year had but have been unable to insure it as getting quotes for 7k plus. So car has been stood on drive for 12 months we have decided to sell it. Went to take it for mot the battery has totally died put a spare one on and it started straight away (good trusty vw) however the abs light and airbag light has come on these was not on when it was last used and this is now a mot fail. Took car for
mot and only failed on binding brakes (cause its been stood ) and the dreaded lights on dash any idea why it would do this as they was not on before is it because battery died and would it be a simple reset job as if it is something more serious it could be scrap which would be a real shame as car is sound apart from abs and airbag light and it would be a grand down the drain

Put the feelers out for some one with vcds/vag com, only way to know it get it scanned, then reset by the person doing the scanning, all should be good, most will do it for drinks money....fyi where you roughly based

What simon said ^^^^ check the sticky for members close to you with vagcom/vcds, scan it, clear the faults and see if they come up again, simple as! Have you tried taking it for a good drive?

aye get a scan of the fault codes done
it's common for the airbag light to come on after a died battery clearing the fault should fix that
the abs light could be a few things take a note of it and then clear the fault see if it comes back
well worth checking the fuse on top of the battery as it is common for the fuse for the abs to crack putting the light on

where about are you a few on hear have vcds/vag com

I live in stockport gtr manchester I drove it back from where it has been stored 15 miles down motorway but can't really take it for a proper drive as no tax

No sure on that model but I had an ABS light on the dash on a 2003 polo

Turned out to be a blown fuse in the battery box, its one which is held in with 2 x 10mm nuts

Look at this first as this is common

The air bag light could be because it hasn't been run for long

Hi imsure you cant run vagcom through it as its before 2003 ( pre obd years ) , i would be checking simple things first like fuses , connection to air bag ect ect

The OBD port does exist on a 2001. I've scanned my lupo (same year) essentially the same/similar to a polo.

I will have a look at the fuses hopefully it is just something simple as they was not on when it got parked up

Cheap ebay cable and vcds lite will see you good for just reading and clearing codes. You only need a registered copy when you want to do more.
Shouldn't cost more then £5.
