As I understand it, when they recharge the system they also add a little lubricant, although that may be incorporated within the gas. Only other thing they add is dye when trying to locate leaks.

If there are no leaks and gas pressure is fine then it looks like faulty compressor.

I had an issue like yours on mine and it turned out to be the aircon pressure switch, its on one off the metal pipes?? I caught it when prodding about, it senses weither or not theres gas in the system, like a safety shut off to the compressor, if I remember rightly theres domething on vagcom that shows ypu weither the compressors on or not atleast that would give you a clue to what it may be

I was led to believe Air con needs gas and liquid to work, so you might not have any liquid in the system.
The refrigerant changes is state in the system. In the condenser it changes from a vapour to a liquid and in the evaporator it changes from a liquid to a vapour. When the system is charged with refrigerant it is charged in a liquid state. Only a thimble full of oil is needed when recharging.
