Air line to clear drainage channels?

Complete overkill or ideal?

Wanting to clear all the sunroof channels (wet footwells) I know I can use an old coat hanger etc but can't find on a search on here where anyone has shoved an air line up there!

Would it damage the rubber seals or perfectly fine to use?

From that I've seen they generally block up near the nipple end at the door jam, so it's a case of squeezing the nipple and poking a thin object up and flushing some water down the sunroof. Air line sounds a bit hardcore, plus youd be firing up the wrong way blasting the crap upwards which wouldn't make sense

Sorry I meant air line from the top not the bottom! Just a figure of speech shove it up there

Where is the nipple? Can only find pics for mk4's, jettas polos...

Can't see anything in the door jams how many nipples altogether are there?

Thanks

Can anyone point me in the right direction of where they are please, I'm drying out the sound deadening to get rid of the damp smell so I can get the baby seat in but obviously want to prevent this from happening again so need to check these nipples/drain points

Thanks

Ok I've managed to find this online, pics for drain routing for MK5 sunroof from vwvortex forum :good:

This is a close up of the front drain "nipple" I believe its within the front windscreen scuttle area next to the vent

Rear arch liners will need to be removed to access the rear "nipples"

For the front the windscreen scuttle needs to come out and one side is difficult to see but doable, other is hindered by windscreen assembly

I'll take a look when I get a chance

Had a bit of time with the car so decided to take a look at the front drain nipples (mk5)

I can't find anywhere on here that has any pics (unless I'm doing something wrong) so started with taking off the wipers then the windscreen scuttle panel. On the drivers side you can see the windscreen motor straightaway

On the passenger side you need to unclip a plastic cover piece first

26711292307_107eea1250_b.jpg

Then you can see the "vent"

If you look in the bottom corner you can see the escape hole

And the top corner has the "nipple"

Gave the nipples a good pull ;) and some crud came out of the drivers side but nothing in the passenger side

Poured some water through the top holes and nothing came out the passenger side but the drivers side seemed fine but no where near enough came out compared to what I put in

Passenger side trim (door corner) where it comes up to the dash has some water showing plus behind the door seal rubber

Drivers side although was coming out showed the same sign

The tube must have come away on the passenger side so I got a feeling the headlining (or at least the trim part over there) needs to come out, judging by the other side that needs to come out as well

Might help anyone else locate where they are on a MK5

And there I was, all excited for finding a sunroof model!

Another thing I'll have the check.

I wonder if these lines are one long pipe or have joints?
Too much pressure could just pop the pipe or pop connections open (ie, syringe or air line)

I suppose you just need some long thin pipe cleaning wires.
Once it pops out of the nipple you know it's clear.

For your damp in the car, it might just be blocked but not actually a failed pipe.
I'd try get something to poke up/down to see if it'll clear.

What bore are the drains?

Thanks for the pic, had a bad feeling it was going to be multiple small pipes joined together, I mean it wouldn't surprise me

I used some grass strimmer wire but it was too flexible, then some net curtain wire which actually worked well, if it got stuck you could twist/turn it easy

This is only my second sunroof but does anyone know why you have the drains? I mean the roof is open when its dry and closed when its not so what are they for? Does it leak when closed?

Capillary action and condensation means damp gets in the cavity between roof and sunroof.

If these block you get water coming out in undesirable places.

Ie, a stream of water on your head on a dry summers day because you parked on a lean on a hill just right at a junction.

Or streamers of water from around the sunroof controls when you brake hard.

Definitely worth making sure they're clear!

You know what, sometimes it pays to read a reply on your topic before heading out alone and trying to be a hero!

I figured what the hell so temporary blocked up the front two drain holes (whats the worst that can happen?)

We went out for a drive earlier and she went to get her sunglasses from the glovebox "errrm whys it wet in here?"

Oh yeah that I'll fix it later, she pulls the blind down as her glasses are soaked and some water drips on her head

Oh yeah I know what that is don't worry, I'll sort it later, so we head off and first time braking and her head gets wet again

Its only her second time in the car (new purchase) took some convincing before purchase - back to square one again

So people yeah as above clear them don't block them :fool:

I finally got round to tackling this and solved the problem of why the sunroof wasn't draining properly. Dropping the headliner down was no easy thing but managed it in the end

Both sides leaked but passenger side was much worse, it was obvious after seeing the drain pipe above the headlining...

Driver side was just about hanging on, it was off but on if you know what I mean

But it was kinked? Didn't make any sense

Both rear pipes were quite solid so no issues there (top side anyway)

Not sure how driver side front was kinked, maybe sunroof was catching? (clutching at straws here), but also not sure how both sides got popped off in the first place, was thinking maybe someone had pulled the nipples (scuttle end) as there is not much grip on them so they may have pulled them too far but the pipe is clipped in along the top?

Either way I have put a couple of jubilee clips on them, after the rain we had today I could clearly see both sides under the front wheel dripping away so jobs a good un 8)

Just got to wait for the wet underside of the carpets to dry out now but at least no more water can get in

This has made my day, in hysterics after reading it. Fair play for going the whole hog and pilling the headliner to resolve the problem properly, top work fella. Was going to suggest fitting hose clips or jubilee clips, but see you've done it :good:

Weird that they were hanging off.

Maybe a previous owner used pipe cleaning practices that made them pop off.

Ie, drains blocked so pushed a cleaner rod down which pushed pipe off connector.
Or using some air pressure into a blockage and 'pop'

I'm sure there is a risk the other way and pushing the pipe off the nipple end.

How do the nipple ends work?

Screwed onto a barbed plug that then has the pipe onto it, or part of the barbed plug itself?

So many little jobs to do, so little time haha!
