Use a cleaning kit like this

http://www.camskill.co.uk/m35b51s3493p29528/ITG_-_Air_Filter_Cleaning_Kit_(contains_500ml_cleaner_and_200ml_JDR-2)_

Use a container big enough for the filter fill up with some water then add some of the solution in and leave for a good 30 mins aggregating it and flipping the filter over the. Just wash thoroughly with water and dry it overnight on the radiator, the next day spray the oil on the filter but don't saturate it just mist it on

It probablies says to use just the solution not with water but I just 50/50 it and its fine, makes the cleaner last longer too

I'd say about that mate these engines need regular oil changes, manual usually says the normal 12 or a year but I'd say about 6 - 8 or a year whatever comes first, usually just an oil change is needed but for the price of a pollen and fuel filter I do the lot and change plugs every two years and also do Haldex oil and filter every few years too

Cotton and foam filters need cleaning fairly frequently as they have a much smaller filtration area than a stock paper filter, but I tend to go visual dirt. If it looks dirty, it is
Probably every 3K for a cone and 5-6K is about right for a drop-in panel.
