Alright all,my R has let me down today..pulled up at set of traffic lights and smoke started coming out of the drivers side under the bonnet check coolant light flashed up on dash, turned car of straight away then got out of car to find coolant coming out of the top of the coolant bottle
,when cooled down filled back up with water and checked to see if any leaks coming out there was none coming out from anywhere,so started to make my way home.Got half way home and stop light came on again,so waited till cooled down then filled back up with water and made it home without stopping again..(think my water pump has now packed up)is this an expensive fix?any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks to andy4motion for ringing me back with what may be causing this
.....

Cheers Mick.
ps,thanks to all the people that didnt stop and ask if needed any help.not one person while i was there for an hour stopped to see if could help in any way.....

Could even be the fans not coming on.

Once the coolant to boil the valve on the coolant cap releases the pressure.

Thanks for reply Bob,both fans are coming on....had fan fix kit done not to long ago.
Water pump or thermostat it is then
As above you would just change both anyway.
When you do fix it make sure you drain the system and refill with the correct mix of G12++ / G13 and distilled water.

Thanks Bob,,
,,,,would you know rough price to get these parts and fitted, cheers Mick.
For an OEM waterpump, thermostat and labour I would estimate between £100 and £150 depending on labour rate and diagnosis time.

Did your temp gauge only start rising at traffic lights?
First thing i see was smoke coming out from under the bonnet, then stop light then check coolant,be honest didnt look at temp as soon as saw smoke turned engine of and got out of R am sure would have noticed while driving along if temp had gone up past 90.

Sounds thermostat to me. Mine did eactly the same as yours. I paid 220inc vat and parts and coolant at vw for the thermo to be done. They replaced all the housing seals bolts etc...if you had hot air out the vents pump is probably ok.

Mine did this on the drive home from buying it! a happy day turned into a sad one

The dealer paid for it fixing so not too bad but i don't know how much it costs, they first changed the water pump but that was not the cause, it was the temperature sensor in the end

Whenever this happens to anyone.... The sequence to go through for checks, starting from easiest/cheapest to most difficult/expensive...
1. Belt
2. Cap
3. Fan fuse
4. Fans.
5. Thermostat
6. Coolant sensor.
7. Pump.
8. Head-gasket. (Worse case scenario) but this will normally be signified to plums of white smoke out the back & running like a dog!!
