trying to sort out an air lock issue after changing my thermostat. does the stat openining allow water to flow from the rad to the block or the block to the rad?

As above block to radiator.

Think about it, until the thermostat opens the coolant circulates around the block to get it up to temperature as quick as possible and once at temperature the thermostat opens adding the radiator into the coolant path to take temperature out of the coolant utiling airflow.

Also never add cold water to hot coolant!!
