It's only the driver's side mirror that auto dims.

Regarding the different colours when set on "auto". It's one colour when the headlights are off and the other colour when the lights are on.

I actually have a passenger side wing mirror that has the auto dimming cables there but no glass. It was from a 05 gti i think so early mk5s i guess could have this option although it doesnt have the reverse dip function.

Just wondered if anyone can help with expanding on this topic... I have the dimming drivers side mirror which is pretty cool and would like to extend it the passenger side... I'm currently replacing my passenger side complete mirror housing to retrofit the dipping mirror (including replacement door controller), the replacement housing includes the dimming mirror function too so I'm hoping to get a new dimming mirror for that side to.

I'm guessing I will need to run 2 cables from the interior mirror to the passenger door to replicate the setup on the driver side... Has anyone actually done this?

This explains the extra cables, I'm just hoping the cables will already be there if drivers side was factory fitted: http://www.myturbodi...-mirrors-19093/

If I do need this can anyone advise where I can get the wires from other than TPS? It's a real PITA to get to them from where I live n work.

Many thanks

Checked the door connector (which I never knew existed) and if you check pins 2 and 3 it will show if it is wired... passenger one doesn't have the wires

Bought the repair wires (TPS very helpful as my part numbers were all slightly wrong - will update with correct ones) and now need to cable it all up - FUN! As well as removing A pillar trim and routing cables. this also involves removing the door outer skin as well as the inner door card
Just need to set aside a couple of hours to get all this done - seems easy enough tho.

Purchased a RHD drivers side (so our passenger side) dimming mirror - I can't see how this won't be compatible, the only difference in part number is one letter 1K0857521D (left RHD) compared to 1K0857521L (left LHD).

Now waiting for parts and fingers crossed.

All this from just wanting mirror dip
About £150 so far.

I fitted a Polar FIS+ which allows mirror dipping as part of its list of goodies. It connects into the Canbus module with lots of info in the centre display for a full height gauge. They are good for red, coloured and white displays. They also allow different bluetooth modules to be used.

I notice mine all the time! Just annoys me the passenger one doesn't go darker!
Yeah indeed, it's so annoying when someone has bright lights behind you and the passenger mirror is shining in your eyes and the other mirrors are all dark, it's so obvious and I can't understand why it was done like this - can't wait to get this working.

Still waiting for some of the parts so no update yet, the repair wires are the biggest pain - gonna probably be a few weeks until I have time to get the door skin off what with the weather and work

like the idea of doing the passenger side, i added this to driver side as i had the mirror with everything except dimming on the drivers, i believe on very early cars ie 55 plate it was offered on both sides but was dropped.

the polar thing is also quite clever but as it doesn't have feedback from the passenger mirror in the shape of the built in potentiometers its a bit hit and miss if its going to end up where you want it where as fitting the proper VW stuff it works a treat.

It was in the original documentation that both exterior mirrors dipped but I don't think any cars were delivered with it, but I may be wrong. I remember a lot of people complaining about it at the time thinking their mirror was faulty.

How funny, finished mine off today as well, really happy with it and was relatively easy in all to do, sorry to hear about your handle problems, I've had to do that before on someone's car when it all fell apart inside, mine played around with the key blank but got it to hold in the end.

Glad you finally got it all sorted

Thanks Si... looks so much better doesn't it

Glad I'm not the only one to have had trouble with the lock, it was the key blank that was causing the problem, it either wasn't sitting properly or wouldn't hold, eventually managed it with some wiggling and NOT over tightening the screw, perfect and tight now - right pain in the arse that part!! As you say though, the rest of the process is actually pretty easy... Really happy with it. BTW I thought I'd broken something at first as once fitted none of the mirrors dimmed - soon worked out dimming is disabled when the doors are open
lol

Thanks Si.
