Fat Head Build Thread

So i thought i would start a build thread for my .:R

I spent valentines day 14th Feb, giving the love of my life all the attention i could offer, then i took her home and waxed her down after paying for it of course
then took her for a ride...

Im talking about my new car of course

Bought it for £6000 which was a good deal i thought considering the specs

Golf Mk4 R32 3.2 V6
Deep Blue Pearl
Sun Roof
£1200 factory radio upgrade (not sure what model)
3 Door
Full Leather Konig Seats

So it is top spec apart from the factory sat nav which i don't like anyway

As most of you know you won't be able to find this spec in this colour for £6k so i got lucky... i think

The guy i bought it from had the wheels refurbed for me as well (cost me £100 extra)

Drove it home, on the way i stopped at the petrol station as i intended to have a day of driving, and up pops a message saying "Oil Sensor Workshop"

I immediately thought ahh [email protected]!k, then it went away so i ignored it

Anyways.....

Got home, then set off to VW dealership to go buy some goodies (filters, plugs, touch up stick, oil)

Literally 2 minutes down the road, on the dashboard it says STOP!.... so naturally i do, notice the temperature is off the scale and think.....maybe £6k wasn't a bargain after all!!!!!

Manage to crawl it back home after letting it cool for a bit as i was just round the corner, as soon as i stop the car just pisses with coolant everywhere and engine is smoking... i call the dealer and explain the situation, he comes round to my house, gets the car taken away to a VW specialist and said he would fix the problem for me

I was absolutely gutted, the car of my dreams, what was meant to be one of the best days of my life so far, and it was on the back of an AA truck

Was in the garage for the next 4 days getting fixed, waiting for parts etc... They change the thermostat, but then realise the water pump had gone

Get the car back and all is well... so i thought

Then i start to notice little things going wrong with it

The cooling fans on the front weren't spinning when the aircon was on, then spinning really fast to try and keep cool, arghggghhgghhhh!!
Also the engine was making a funny noise, like one of the belts or something, the aircon compressor was making a right racket and the steering sounds like a groaning noise!!!

Spoke to the dealer and he sent it away to the garage again, they changed the alternator pulley, topped up the power steering fluid, and replaced the auxiliary belt and said they wouldn't fix the other problems because they weren't major, they said the cooling fans were working, but just not 100%, and the air con is working... just making a noise, and they said the engine noise has reduced

The initial feedback i got from it was... the dealer was paying so doesn't want to spend much fixing it, so i decided to take it into my own hands, just because i wanted a good job doing

I actually found out that the Full service history the car has, was a lie! VW had not seen it since 2006!

So told the dealer and he said i can have a chance of having my money back, as a one off deal, and i refused, still knowing it was a cheap car, even with the faults

I flushed the oil twice because it was like sludge! not a good sign but i will give it all the love i can, changed the spark plugs, oil filter, pollen filter, left the air filter because of future plans

I bought some cooling fans from ebay £40, took a few hours stripping the whole front end off, changed them, and the radiator swell as it came with the fans attached and it looked in good nick, put the front end back on and voila! the fans work perfect! i was chuffed

The next day i changed the oil level sensor to get rid of the oil sensor workshop on the dash, and it has never returned since, jobs a good un, and i replaced the alternator belt tensioner to try fix the noise, which it did! sweet

Now the only problems are the air con compressor making a noise, which i have heard is also causing the noise of the engine and power steering, but we will see when we get to changing it.

I bought an air con compressor for £41 posted from ebay tonight, so when that comes ill see what the crack is

One other problem i have noticed is the paint on the wheels that the dealer had refurbed is chipping off and looks like a poor job, looking at them they didn't even take the tyres off to paint them.... hmm waste of £100 as i will need to get them redone at some point

Then i made a bit of a stupid mistake, I bought some black vinyl from ebay to stick to the B pillars in-between the windows as i thought it might look cool, did one side so i could compare, left it a few days so i could make my mind up

Decided i didnt like it, also, why would i want to cover up a beautiful colour anyway

Peeled it off with great care, took me about 15 minutes, and along came the laquer with it!!! DOH!!!!! so i have to get that repainted at a cost of £
but its my own fault so fair enough

Sooooooo.....

So far the list of things done/to do are:

Clean the oil..........Done
Change filters..........Done
Spark Plugs..........Done
Cooling fans..........Done
Oil Level Sensor..........Done
Air Con Compressor..........Purchased but not yet done
Power Steering...........Hopefully connected to Air con (i have heard stories of other people with the same problems)
Wheels repainting..........Not yet done
B pillar repainting..........Not yet done

I still think it is a diamond in the rough, and with a bit of love and attention it will be as good, if not better than other R32's out there, theres not much else that can break on it

Knowing i am coming up to the point where the car is running sweet, i decided to look elsewhere for a few mods

Last Wednesday i forked out £525 for a Milltek Non Res Cat Back including fitting from the one and only Awesome
They will give me a ring when it comes in stock this week, can't wait!!!
Will post pics/videos when done, even though most of you know what they are like anyway

Tonight i purchased a neuspeed short shifter for £47 from ebay, came from a cupra R, but i believe they are the same
Will post pics when i get it

Oh and one more mod that i did that i forgot to mention, i went round the car with cardboard, tape and vaseline to get rid of creaks and rattles, filling in holes and noisy bits
sounds like a solid new car

Cheers, and the cardboard and tape is to stick in places where there is rattles on the dash etc... with it being an old car, the rattles really p!ss me off, the vaseline was used with a brush to put down the sides of the air vents as the drivers side vent was rattling like crazy, sorted the problem and now the cockpit is silent :)

Thanks mate, i set my heart on it so kept it, you don't get a divorce if your wife gets ill do you, you stick with her, thats what I'm doing with this :) plus i enjoy fixing cars so its all good as long as its little things
Nice to see your keeping your patience and sticking with It.

Hope you get It all sorted out soon....
Well I've been busy :D

Went to awesome yesterday to pick up my Milltek Non Res, and i love it, it makes it sound faster... which is good :D went for the GT100 tips as i think they look better, my dad has the other ones, don't know if they are jet or something...

Here is a video of the standard exhaust:

And also i managed to get myself a neuspeed short shifter for £47 (which came from a Cupra R but they are the same) from good old ebay which is great as they are over £145 or something brand new, i love the way it shifts now, takes some getting used to but makes a big difference, for those who don't have one or are thinking about getting one, i recommend it and ill post some pics/vids of it in action when i get chance (I'm away on a business trip at the mo)

More stuff coming in the post this week :D

So i bought a air con compressor 2nd hand for £50 which is alright, came in the post but haven't got round to fitting it yet, hopefully it works and solves the problem of the weird noise the existing one makes, and also hope it solves the power steering noise which I've heard is related

A few more things that have bugged me, there is now an annoying squeak on what appears to be the drivers side front brake, so ill try the harsh braking technique to see if it gets rid of dust or whatever, if not, new pads it is...

And also a knocking on the drivers side in a similar area when i go over bumps, turn, brake or accelerate and it pisses me off to say the least
You must have the patience of a saint sticking with her with all those problems! hope it all works out for you :)
Oh and i also fitted a Carbonio Cold Air Intake what i bought from a fellow member for £50, 2nd hand but saved myself £150 so all is good :) just means i can spend that £150 elsewhere on the car lol, quite fiddly to fit, had to remove the existing air filter, battery and wheel arch to get access, put the CAI in, bolted it all up and replaced everything else, there is quite a noticeable difference in power to be honest and I'm quite happy with it, can't really hear any improvements in engine noise because the milltek just drowns it out with the roar anyway

Anyone know where you can get the carbonio sticker from? this one was already stuck on and i don't like that you can't see it all... I'm picky like that

Changed the wheel centre caps because my old ones had whiteworm everywhere, its little touches like this that make a car stand out, i love attention to detail :)

lol thanks, i don't have much patience to be honest, i just can't let an R suffer anymore with a bad owner, I'm slowly but surely bringing her back to life :) now she can breathe with the air intake

haha she will appreciate that! she looks like a nice example hope you enjoy working on her!
Car looks good, it's nice to see you are enthusiastic about it :)

About your wheel refurb, i think the dealer i bought mine from had my wheels refurbed on the car as the job is $hite and here is silver overspray on all of my calipers!

Something i didn't spot til later, but just goes to show what a $hit, quick job even main dealers will do to get a car off the forecourt!

Yeah, i guess you get what you pay for, this refurb cost me £100 which is dead cheap, hence the shite job that was done, but right now it was a complete waste of £100 as i will have to get them redone
Im torn between anthracite or gloss black... any opinions?
Im also gonna either paint the callipers red for now, then possibly upgrade to better brakes in the future, maybe porsche
Coming Along well, it seems that the knocking noise is common on our cars mate i get the same when i put full right lock on but only if the car is cold its bonkers! i have replaced ball joints and front suspension still no luck will look at the cv joint next, its not major but its a pain in the butt and i hate my car not running perfect.

Not sure on the wheel colour mate im having the same issues choices choices choices :)

Keep up the great thread

Yeah i heard somewhere it could be the anti roll bar, ill have to get it up on ramps to see what it is, i cant live with it! And with the wheels at the mo im moving more towards anthracite just because i see loads of black wheels on the road
What do u lot think about painting calipers red? Chavvy or cool?
Well its another fine rainy day in England and i finally had enough with the squeaky brakes, so i bought some new brembo pads all around, they aren't the best but they will do for now, just need to get them fitted later this week
The shop didn't have the rears in so they are on order, £50 for the front pads, £17 for the rear pads

And Ive been doing a bit of research and decided to buy some wheel spacers, i have the front, just waiting for the rear to arrive at the shop, £45 for the front spacers, £50 for the rear

15mm for the front

25mm for the rear

Once i have these babies on ill be a happy easter bunny

well what a ball ache its been
Turns out the brake pads i bought were for the mk5 r32, the guy in the shop didn't know what the f£@k he was talking about, so i took them back for a refund as they said they could get me mk4 ones next week and i couldn't be arsed

sooo went to another parts shop and got some mintex pads front and rear .... and guess what.... they were the wrong f?$kin ones! arghhhhh :bang head:
but to be honest I'm glad because i really didn't want mintex (heard rumours of a friend of a family member that used to work for mintex and put shit in the mixture lol) plus they aren't as good

and now I'm at the stage of not wanting to rely on other people so I'm getting some from the internet, and I'm also not going to bother getting cheap pads, I'm gonna up the ante and go for some ebc yellowstuff front and rear, I've heard people get full sets for £135 from lark speed but ill see what i can do

anyhoooo, ill let you lot know when i get them

but for now ive also been told the shop i went to can't get 25mm spacers so again i had to resort to internet shopping
got some for £60 including bolts, will arrive next week i hope...

upon attempting to change the front pads i thought i might as well put the front spacers on and here are the photos before and after, will put more up when i have time to clean it and stuff

And obviously it looks stupid at the minute because the fronts are sticking out and the rear wheels are tucked away somewhere

The rear 25mm spacers finally arrived

Fitted them straight away and what a difference they make, its how it should have been built from the factory
Only thing ive noticed is the wheels need balancing properly as there is vibrations in the steering wheel at 60+mph

But here are a few before and afters

Fat ass

For anyone wanting some, defo get 15mm front and 25mm rear or more! Not less
Theres no rubbing issues but im on standard springs so who knows what will happen in the future ;)

Also off topic

I fixed a radiator hose today that my dad didnt put on right so was leaking coolant, replaced the tricky spring clip with a jubilee clip and was easy

Also i changed the oil level sensor a while back and recently got the dashboard warning again, oil level is fine and its a new sensor :S
I took the sensor off today and cleaned up some connections, lets hope that fixes it, also the oil plug was leaking slightly so got a new plug and problem solved

Now i just need to save up for yellowstuff pads, get round to changing the air con compressor and im golden :D

Great work mate..nice to see an uncared for R brought back to life and given the TLC it deserves..
Some ppl buy an R,not realizing their running costs, then cant afford to maintain them.
