Hey guys,

As some of you know, just bought my R less than a week ago and I got about 2,000 miles left to go until the next advised service. It's currently at 36k but thought I'd get the Haldex Oil and Filter change over and done with alongside the service.

I was planning to wait for another 1,000 miles but thought I'd bite the bullet and book it in. So here are some break down costs and let me know guys if this sounds right to you..

Haldex Oil and Filter = £83ish

Big service (as the guy mentioned on the phone) = £540ish (includes changing air filter, pollen filter, spark plugs etc). Does anyone know what else is included?

Air con service = £79ish

Brake Fluid change = £80ish mark..

Air con and Brake Fluid advised to do every two years?

Also, getting the driver's side indicator light changed to a brand spanking new one for £25 as the current one has a crack.

All in all, call it £800.

Let me know what you guys think.

Cheers,
RJ

I would say the price for the 40k service ia a bit high, I would expect it to be around £350.

Price for the other stuff sounds about right.

Have it done at a good specialist. I had a major service on mine with brake fluid, haldex and dsg and it cost 450 all in - the guys there really knew their stuff with the owner having had an R32 before when they were new.

I would rather trust them with my car than VW who wanted almost 800 as it didn't come under fixed price servicing.

£800 is very steep.

I paid £540 for my major service service on a dsg, get dealer t price match if you can, save yourself a bit.
When you say major service, do you know what they did to accumulate the £540 figure?

If you can find a place that uses gen VW parts within a 5-10 mile radius then they will match that price, also they do a 28 point check, plug into VCDS and you also get the stamp in the book too!

DSG-£180
Haldex-£80ish
Oil-£140 ish (LongLife)
Indicator you can buy off eBay as a genuine part brand new and takes only 10-15mins.
Spark plugs I believe are around £160 but best a platinum which I believe they use but its not a difficult or hard to access job.

£800 is undoubtedly expensive and by a fair bit too!

Plugs are £40 from TPS, I was a little put off using VW for servicing when I rang one dealers for a haldex change price and was asked new or used!!! Then another was arguing that it's only oil that they would change and not the coupling? So decided to buy the parts from TPS.
Oil and filter, plugs, coolant, fuel filter and pollen filter came in at £122.. Will do brake fluid and maybe gearbox and diff oils before xmas at least that way I know it's sorted, just glad It's off the long life plan now

Best thing to do is Long life oil on a time/date service. It is good an relatively easy to do yourself but just depends if you want the stamp.

I was charged £440 for my 40K service. That included Haldex and brake fluid. 800 quid is mental! If your air con is cold it doesn't need anything doing to it. You can fog it yourself for £20 or so with a kit off ebay...

I got a receipt and bits, i'll dig it out and take a look. and post here.
Thanks!

and thanks to all your responses guys.

Will give them a phone call tomorrow and ask for a break down. My R was last serviced 2 years ago but in that time, only 7k miles has been done ..therefore, I should really go for a minor service instead of a major? Will find out the prices tomorrow morning and differences in between the two and will keep you guys updated.

If it's not been serviced in 2 years it sounds as if it's on longlife service regime. 7k miles in 2 years is not really suitable for longlife and it should be on time & distance regime where at least the oil is changed once a year or 10k miles, whatever happens first.

If it was my car I would just get everything that is due at 40k miles done and then you know it's done. This is what I would have done, if it was my car

Oil and filter
Pollen filter
Fuel filter
Air filter
Plugs
Haldex oil and Filter
Brake fluid

Yeah, I do think that I just want to go for it and get it over and done with. Also, that way I start off with a clean slate with the R since I only bought it a few days ago.

It's just the price that I feel I'm being ripped off especially reading other people's comments that they would pay max £350-400. I just wonder why the VW guy quoted me so high..its worrying!

OK..so I gave them a call and spoke to the same guy, Matthew on the phone. Told him that friends of mine who own the same vehicle have been quoted much less in the past - why have I been quoted so high even though it's a major service?

So he broke it down for me..

Long Life Oil - £300ish
Spark Plugs - £160ish
Air Filter - £45ish
Pollen Filter - £30ish
Haldex Oil & Filter - £80ish
Air Con Service - £80ish
Brake Fluid Change - £90ish

The last service was just a inspection service and that was in 2011 so regardless of mileage, we would have to look at time too.

He seemed genuine so I could not really fault him.

What you guys think?

OK, so another post...thought I'd be a sneaky one and phone up another dealership..

So spoke to Darren and got a quote for a major service which includes the oil and filter, longlife oil, spark plugs, air filter, pollen filter..basically whatever Matthew said..for £439!!! £100 CHEAPER

Anyway..it gets better, Matthew said he would charge me £84 for a haldex oil and filter change whereas Darren said £81.

Even better, Darren told me they have a special offer on the Brake fluid change & Air con Service for £99 including VAT whereas Matthew quoted respectively £79 for Aircon & £89 for Brake Fluid so another £70 saving there.

All in all, one phone call to a different branch saved me £180.

That leaves it to £655 for literally everything all in and I'd be pretty cool for the next 2 years and just have a inspection service next year.

The cheek..grrr!!

Would still use a known specialist if I were you, even if its no cheaper(which I doubt it won't be),I would expect a better job to be done by more savvy mechanics. I thought the same as you when I got my R, VW main dealer the way to go....WRONG! Half-arsed,shoddy & expensive were my experience, and quoting for work that needed to be done immediately that didn't. Never again. Be careful fella!
