Hi all,

I took my 55 reg Mk V R32 on 59k miles to VW today to investigate ESP warning light. The initial diagnostic showed up a G201 ABS Pump fault code which was repaired free of charge. However, the ESP warning light came on again and a subsequent diagnostic identified an underlying fault with the Haldex ECU. The Head Technician said I'm looking at £2,868 + VAT for an All-Wheel Drive Control Module (Part Number 0AV 525 010K) plus 4 hours labour !!!

I have a 6 page hard copy print-out of the function test log which doesn't really mean a great deal to me but here's what I believe to be the relevant fault code information:

01324 013 All-Wheel Drive Control Module -J492- Read Fault Memory sporadic
00924 009 Relay for headlamp cleaning system -J39- Open circuit/short to Ground (GND) static
00003 014 Control module faulty sporadic
02248 014 Haldex Clutch Control Valve -N373- faulty sporadic

Does this diagnosis sound right, is there anything else I should be checking and if worst comes to worst any thoughts on where I could source this part at a human price?

I take it this was a VW dealer you took your car to as they want to replace your complete rear diff. Fuckturds !

The Haldex ECU is only £650 and is only about 1hr labour to replace. I know my R32 had the same problem.

As Lucifer says above, it looks as though they quoted you for a complete Haldex unit, which is not required.

I should add, take the car to someone who knows what they are doing whether it be another VW dealer or an indie you trust.

It was a VW dealer but to be fair they have treated me ok in the past. They completed the ABS Pump sensor repair free of charge today and were genuinely surprised when that didn't sort everything out. The Head Technician suggested I try to source a second hand part and he would look at the labour rates to fit so I don't think they were trying to turn me over.

It sounds to like they misdiagnosed the problem in the first place. 99% of MK5s with the ESP light staying on turn out to be the G201 problem, however the G201 problem is very rare on the R32. I think they just assumed that would fix the problem knowing that VW are offering goodwill to covrr this problem as it's so widespread.

A new Haldex ECU will fix the problem and you can even buy an upgraded one. It's a simple thing to change, a few bolts and a plug. Change Haldex oil and filter at the same time.

In my experience the VW dealer doesn't always know best but if you're happy to shell out the money for nothing then go ahead.

VW did quote £618 + VAT separately which I think may have been for the Haldex ECU but the technician seemed to think the full Haldex unit would be needed based on the diagostic report. I'm not particularly technical but had read about the ESP / G201 ABS Pump fault on his forum and other sites and so took it to VW in the hope of a goodwill repair. I do have an independent VW/Audi specialist nearby and so I'll pop down and see them on Monday.

You can't rely on the othet codes being valid because they could be a consequence of the Control ulUnit being faultu. Certainly worth a 2nd opinion though.

no problem only reason i showed you the link for the diff was for the controller with a view to sell on the diff .

fluffing dealers... They really fuck me off.... Just change the module as advised mate, that should cure the problem, & as stated earlier by someone, change the oil & filter too.. It's a little bit fiddly but a piss easy job, although it'll need to be done over a pit or up on ramps, as the car needs to be sat level..

I'll head down to my local independendent VW/Audi specialist on Monday and steer them toward the Haldex ECU as advised although I have to admit I'm tempted by the rear diff that Mushy 16v has advertised in the for sale section. This forum is a real mine of information.

Hi Guys I am new here but I posted my car details a few weeks ago. Amazing site BTW ...stunning reference and such a good crowd of people ! I have an R32 Mk 5 2006 98,000 miles.

I have just taken my car to Matt at Volkscraft in Exeter and he has run it through the VAG COM.
The ESP light was intermittent but only came on at start up sometimes, then stayed on for the whole journey.
If you stop, switch off and then turn the key and wait then the ESP light goes out and will stay off for the whole journey.

The fault code reads:
00003-14 control module defective ECU
02248-14 valve for controlling clutch operating angle N373 defective

Matt is testing tonight to see if fault can be cleared and if it is actually running in 4wd at any point.

So I guess the question is do I get Matt fit a new or secondhand ECU control unit to see if it cures the problem as it did with South Bodge above ?

If yes...then does anyone have a new or secondhand ECU controller please ?

I am a little afraid that I might need a complete Haldex coupling and the cost of that...

I would really appreciate all your ideas !

I live up at Cullompton and have several Mk5 haldex controllers here if you want to fit one and test to see if it fixes the problem.
