Hi guys need some advice, i was driving the R tonight and encountered a bit of a problem. I was driving down the bypass wassnt flat out but just pushing a little and then all of a sudden nothing. Just a constant speed it was as if something had blown but i there was no bang, smoke or anything. Like it was in safety mode? I pulled off onto a little road and stopped looked under the bonnet and all was well. The engine was chugging a bit which was different and on the dash i now have the epc and traction light permenently on. I turned the car off left it a moment then turned back on and it now runs fine. But i still have the traction and epc light on. Any idea what moght have happened? As im stummped. Any help much apreciated thankyou

You need it scanned with vagcom really.

Where abouts are you as there could be some one local to you who can do it for you

Hi T1LL3Y,

Sorry to hear of your problems. I'm a bit confused.
Whose Rotex kit is it? How long have you owned the car? I guess you bought the car FI'd already? It is likely a straightforward thing such as a boost pipe leak (blown off) or maybe a failed coil pack or MAF sensor etc...

The part I'm confused about is your post seems to imply little mechanical/fault finding knowledge and yet owning a very complicated, very rare and highly modified vehicle ?
Please note this not meant to be offensive, just a curious observation. Do you have the 'free' vagcom/Ross-Tech cable - if not I'd suggest this as a first if you own an FI R. Better yet, get the full paid for version. This will allow you to 'see' what those warning lights on the dash indicate which is the first part of diagnosing the fault.

Next up, do you know how your supercharger & forced induction works ? I'd get reading and learning if not. When I started I knew little about the intricacies of forced induction - but spending time studying, watching instructional youtube videos, and looking at how the kits are made for our R's 'before' I went FI was vital to understanding what & why things go wrong.

Your vehicle will go wrong, whatever FI kit you have, and without the some basic understanding of how your setup works you're going to get frustrated and disappointed when this happens. My advice, take your vehicle to a specialist (one that's worked on FI R's before, or at the very least modified turbo cars) and spend some time with them learning about how they look for the problem, get them to point out the basic modified components that your vehicle has and study/take photo's of the underside of the car so you can see where things are.

You've bought a really nice, fun car and you'll enjoy it even more with a bit more knowledge. Trust me, I've read many posts on this forum over the years of people who didn't even know how to replace a bulb or windscreen wipers before, then giving it a go, and then the confidence grows... Now some of those people are tackling big engine re-builds and complicated diagnosis procedures - and they're much more confident about upgrading and further modifying their cars because of it.

Then the next time something small or a bit more significant happens you'll have some basic pointers at where to look first.
With the symptoms you describe, and probably the most common thing with any additionally modified forced induction car in world, it's often a boost pipe blowing off. So get a torch, drive one side of the car up a kerb and look under your car to see if they are all ok.

Good luck

Most probably a boost pipe as Toff's said. Happened on lots of the rotrex kits. More than likely at the silicone coupler either side of the intercooler. If you're getting it sorted at a garage it's worth getting a small lip welded to the ends of the pipework.

Also if there was standing water/ heavy rain while on the motorway you may have got the MAF upset. It sits right on the floor with rotrex kit so is susceptible to water damage. This will cause the car to go into limp mode too.

If it was a boost pipe it would still be running bad..he said it's running ok now but still has the lights on it.

Ahhh yes your right, I took to mean it was running rough when driving and then was fine after turning off and on at tick over. But if it's all fine driving again (except the lights) then as you say it's unlikely to be a boost pipe.

Hi guys thanks for all your help snd info. Toffs your right i do need to research more about the car i have a very basic knowledge of it sll but starting to get my head around it. I had thorght it might have been a coil pack or something but not completly sure. I managed to get a friend to scan it with vagco yesterday and the fault codes that showed up are to do with cylinder 2 misfire, internal module malfunction, MAF sensor signal to low and fuel level to low. Ive been told there was a recal on some of the R32 coilpacks? Anyone ever herd of this?

Fuel level low.....you didnt run it really low did you????

Reason i ask is i had a similar incident. Fuel got low it started missing. I put some fuel in it, cleared the codes and she ran fine ever since...
If this is the case the fact it Rotrex'd doesn't matter if she ran out of jungle juice......

Definately sounds like a coilpack issue, they were also different from the older versions............you must remember that FI'd R's produce at lot more heat under the bonnet so everythings under a bit more pressure than a normal R.

Had mine changed by Storm at the last service and made a big difference.
