Hi,
My mk5 r32 was hit by someone from behind, he at first acted normal, taking responsibility, asking how I wanted to handle the mess - insurance or private. He said he worked for a garage and would handle it all.

Fast forward 2 weeks and now I am being diked around - the car is at someone else's garage waiting for payment from the guy who hit me, who is now I learn, uninsured.

I know I am in idiot for agreeing a private fix. Considering it is 2 weeks old now, can I still go to the police, insurance company?

Thanks a mill

Um thats a hard one ideally you need to contact the police but obviously they are going to say you should of rang when the accident occured. How ever I know from experience that they will more than likely get it sorted for you.As he is un insured aswell they will certainly be keen to investigate.

I would contact your local Police station asap and explain the situation.I would be keen to get the car back aswell to be honest.

They should investigate it as uninsured drivers are I real nightmare.....
They have no regards for other road users and even there own passengers, can't stand them!!!

You should always have gone through with the insurance the first place mate, just a shame with these people in today's society.

I personally would contact the Police straight away and let them know everything, that way the ball is in their court.

i used to work on the claims department at direct line, happens all the time

what you should have done is

on day 1: contact your insurance company and report the incident for information only NOT as a claim, giving them all of the details about the other car/person involved
that way, they know about it, they have your side of the story and your arse is covered
police should only get involved in injuries and uninsured drivers, which you didnt know at first so thats fair enough

at this moment in time, call the police and tell them IF he is genuinely dicking you about

but be warned, if you go ahead and claim from an uninsured driver, you are actually claiming against your own insurance because there is no other insurance company involved to get money back from = your premium going stupid next year and ncb down the drain

just about the only company i know of that covers you against uninsured drivers is direct line, but only that means that your no claims bonus isnt effected, your premium still is

so basically you will lose out, unless he pays for it like he originally said he would, do you have his address and phone number etc? id go down and see them in person

Also if you report them to the police he will not pay for the damages, and i dont think the police can make them
