Can mk4 gear knobs be unscrewed or are they attached to the stick part?

If i remember you lift the leather up and past the knob, you will find a black push fitting with a crush clamp wrapped around the bottom, remove the clamp and pry one of the clips away and pull at the same time...........

I used a jubilee clamp to refit my R-line knob in my gti

Hope this helps

Why did VW design something which could only be used once? It's only a small inexpensive part so they won't make profit out of it.
They design it to do the job it needs to do for the lowest cost. Even if a part costs 1p more than it needs to be, with the high volumes produced, that can lead to a lot of money and that's only one part. Imagine that 1p extra on every part on the car and you're soon into tens of millions of pounds over the life of the model.
