Just had my '58 plate MKV R32 serviced by VW. They've reported a burst/leaking exhaust flexi pipe and "since its attached to the catalytic convertor" the whole thing will need replaced at £1300

Does anyone have any alternatives to just opening my wallet to VW?

I had to have the Flexi's replaced on my old A3 3.2. I just got my local exhaust specialist to chop in 2 new ones, cost about £300 but was cheaper than full replacement

I had just the same problem on my 08 plate MK5, as you say got quoted around a grand for a front pipe with cats (part only) in the end i got a guy who makes stainless systems local to me to cut out the faulty flexi and weld a new one in, i had both done to be on the safe side, cost me £280.00 all in. A few places i asked about doing this seemed reluctant to carry it out due to the amount of things that had to removed ie steering rack and subframe, then it all had to be re aligned, where are you based?

Where do you get the flexi's to cut back in then, as mine are now blowing too and I can't really afford a whole new exhaust, standard or Milltex.

Thanks.

The garage were going to supply them but they were too small for the pipe diameter so I got 2 off ebay.
Can't remember the size sorry.

Didn't think flexi's were sold on eBay, I thought you had to buy the whole pipe?

You can get them on ebay or any custom exhaust place should be able to supply and wield one in easy enough.

In sell Mk5 de-cat and sport cat down pipes but don`t have any in stock at the moment. If you just want the flexy repaired any custom exhaust shop should be able to remove, cut out and replace the flexy and bolt the exhaust system back together for you easy enough.

Good news, all done and back to normal.

I found 2 no. flexi sections alone from a local exhaust outlet, arranged for a mechanic friend to do the pain in the arse job and take the pipes off, cut these out and weld in both the new ones, now it sounds bloody amazing.

It must have been blowing ever since I bought the car as it's never sounded this good before.

Plus, as a random bonus, I knew that I had to get the exhaust fault light reset on the dash and then randomly the other night driving home the light switched itself off, never thought the system was that clever!
