Ive been out an about all day, came home for lunch and got ready for my afternoon off. decided i was going to clean the car and do a bit of detailing as this week has seen her attract alot of grime and salt on the paintwork

so trundled off the Halfrauds to by me a new chamois and some glass cleaner. as i got back onto the drive way something caught my eye....something out of place.......something blue.....

worked out what it is?

thats right, its the bottom end of one of my rear springs!!! :ahhhhh:

glad i spotted it so ididnt puncture a new tyre, and also thats its not flown off and hit another innocent car. didnt notice any difference in handling nor has the car sagged so if it hadnt have come off on the drive i may never have known!

you can see from the above image that its simply just sheered off, never known this to happen before, theres still enough spring seated for the car to be ok, but considering i have to drive 310 miles to northampton tomorrow night for xmas with my folks a mild panic decended. with the weight of luggage and my nippers in the back i was nervous. called vw and theres no springs at any dealers anywhere in the uk, the soonest i would be looking at would be xmas eve

i'm forced to pay for emergency delivery from the main vw warehouse to get a pair for the morning, plus and extra £5 to gaurantee before noon. even then they dont have a slot in the workshop to fit them.

so put in a call to RK Engineering (cheers for the number pomme :top:) and i am now getting the springs delivered there and they will do the springs at lunchtime for me.

disaster averted!

getting my alpine sub intalled at 8.30am, then off to RK for lunch, then home to pack, then up to northampton

gunna need my mums mince pies after all that. and thats without mentioning the burst pipe in the upstairs ensuite this morning that flooded the downstairs utility and blew all the lights in the downstairs of the house

i'm now sipping a vodka and coke :151:

the vw warranty is pretty decent for what it is, but somethings are understandable that they wont cover

although road springs that are less that 4 years old shouldnt do this!!! but havent got the time to argue it with them, will chat to them about it when i get home again in the new year, maybe theyll split the bill with me, doubt it but worth a punt

VC, did you have any knocking noises coming from the rear, it's just that mine "knocks" every so often and I'm worried that I may find my rear spring(s) like that!?

I guess i'm going to have to keep an eye on mine, this seems to be a little common for my liking!

nope, there was no indication of anything wrong, no noises, no change in handling. you can see from the image that although the top of the spring section is corroded it didnt cause the snap, the metal has actually failed causing it to sheer
