Okay guys, im having to grow up now with the little one here, so the r32 is up for sale and ive set my brain (not heart) on a diesel estate doh. So im just wondering peoples views on the Volvo v50 and bmws 3 and 5 sieres (probably 320d and 520d for the mpg, unless the 2.5 or 3 are better to have).

I have a 330d as a daily runabout, and it does 44mpg around town or on a fast run, take it a bit easy and it does 47 to 52 mpg. A couple of friends have 320d's and they get much the same, all are manual.

I know a few guys with V50s and they are all pleased with them- good solid safe motors that don't miss a beat very often.

With regards to the BMs I don't think you can go wrong with their diesel engines, I know older 3 series go through droplinks but I'm sure it has been rectified with newer models. Run flats are to be avoided if possible and if you can afford to stretch to a 6 cyclinder then personally I would as they are fantastic engines and even better when mapped. Personally I like the 5 series estate I think they look very smart.
