Hi new member, on the lookout for a r32 3 door dbp.

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/volkswagen/golf-r32-r/volkswagen-golf-mk4-r32-2003/1635479

Its near me and i have been to see it, looks pretty tidy but is not without some problems. I personally would rather the standard grill and bonnet, and the rear has been flushed and put on a popper. The car was off the road for two years but then has had a lot of work to put it right in 2011.

Whats you guys think?
Any advice is appreciated

Thanks Ross

Overall the car seems fine. Couple of subtle mods already done which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending whether you want them or not, the debadged grill, and the tailgate are nice touches.. Pics look fine, interior seems clean and looked after, it's also had the timing chains done which is good as it's an expensive job to fix if it does go. Also it's a very fair price and with good low miles too.

The only things i'd be asking about are why is the satnav disc missing (don't ask isn't really a good or appropriate answer) and why has it been off road for 2 years and how has it been maintained in that time.. Get an HPI check on it and possibly a VCDS scan if you can.

If you're a newbie, check this guide to buying too, it's full of useful info. http://www.r32oc.com..._4050#entry4050

P.S. Welcome to the club!!

Welcome - as RJH states ask plenty of questions and get a look at whatever written history the seller has.
Looks good in the pictures and the price seems fair.

Cheers both,

Yeah i did ask about the cd and he said that his girlfriend was having a clear out of cds and threw the navi cd out, whether thats true i don't know. He said that he bought the car in 2009 and it wasn't running tidy, so he had it off the road as he had a company car, so in 2011 he took it to an vw & audi specialist and they have changed a lot of parts in the engine and gave it a overhaul, main one in my eyes being the timing chain. He showed me the invoice for this, totaling £2600. The log book is stamped up to 50 odd thousand so thats pretty good, then there was just invoices from garages for tyres and services and things, but not a massive amount. Its only got one key, and i noticed it hasn't got the full display in the dials for the sat nav. Its had the coil pack recall in 2011. But this is the worst part for me, the a pillar & other bits of trim in the boot looks to have been removed before and not put back correctly, and the piece of trim which has the whole for the boot mechanism has been flocked.

So he did say that none of these mods were done by him, and that its a 4 owner but the last owner was a trader who registered it in his own name. We went out in it, it didn't seem to have any nasty knocks coming from the suspension which was good.

What do you think with this added information?

Thanks ross

Just done a HPI check on the car

Not looking good, the mileage some how goes from 90,000 to 51000 then 55000

What do you think this means?

Cheers in advance

Ross

People don't tend to amend the mileage if a new engine is fitted. Assuming it's not clocked, my guess would be that the clocks have been swapped at some point.

The only accurate record of mileage is the MOT record, all others are voluntary and can easily be misrepresented.

From the pics it looked ok and the description too, but obviously anyone can word it to their advantage. You only get a feel of the car and the seller upon seeing them. Sounds like the HPI paid off then.. Alarm bells started ringing for me when you mentioned the half screen display (if it's got satnav it should have full) and the trim not being put back together suggested tampering.. Now it's apparent why the mileage is up and down, they aren't the original clocks..

Steer well clear, there's always plenty of nice ones on here for sale and from guys you can trust..

Might not be a replica pal.. If you've noticed, whoever's owned it at some point has had it debadged and smoothed, so might have opted to have the washer caps deleted whilst at it...

Hey Ross,
I looked at their car before you and walked away. Steve the owner was a nice guy but the car looked like a lot of financial pain for the next owner. Body needed about 1k to get back to original after all the rusting mods front n back and the engine bay looked like a farm yard .. I didn't even drive it
.
I have bought another R off the forum yesterday so keep looking

Thanks everyone for your help and comments, yea I was attracted with the low milage and price but now I know why. It may have been possibly a show car at one point in its life, but too much like hassle for me. So I'm staying well away. Ill keep on the lookout.
