Just thought I'd share the results for anyone thinking of going for this!

When I bought the car the wheel was in bad shape - lots of sun damage had caused the leather to fade and it was worn very smooth (almost through the hide) in places, plus it was covered in small dings and ring scratches.

Pics from before:

I'd heard good things on this forum about Jack at Royal Steering Wheels so thought I would give him a try. After finding a cheap 3-spoke GTi wheel in a scrapyard and swapping it on, on looking up his address I found I'm reasonably local so dropped the wheel off after work. I was fairly set on going for the same smooth black style as OEM but after he let me have a look at some he'd done previously I settled on 50/50 plain nappa leather and perforated leather. A quick flick through his thread catalogue to pick a stitching colour and I was told to come back in a week. Picked up the results earlier and they're impressive enough to want to show off

The blue stitching came out a little darker than the catalogue but it's actually a very good match to DBP. Although now I need to get him to do me a pair of gaiters to finish things off

I did fit it earlier - but by torchlight as I didn't get back till late. Installed pics tomorrow! Very much looking forward to the drive to work, the GTi wheel was horrible...

Fitted pic:

Total cost was £110, it's a little more if you want him to fit/remove your wheel or for postage. Totally worthwhile, it's much nicer to drive than it was! I think I might be a spline out though, my fault for fitting it in the dark...

was thinking of doing this ! does any mk4 steering wheel fit ? they are on ebay for like 40 quid and will be ok for a spare !
Any Mk4 wheel should fit, but if you get a three-spoke one out of a GTi then the airbag's a straight swap from your R32 wheel so you can buy just the rear part of the wheel. I got a wheel plus airbag from my local scrapyard for £15, I was dead chuffed as the airbag that was fitted previously was all scratched up around the logo sticker and this one's much better!

Older wheels will physically fit the spline (e.g. Corrado) but probably won't have the required holes on the back of the wheel to align the steering angle sensor so you may get ESP errors - and obviously the airbag light will be on.

Finally got my new shifter fitted, after a comedy of errors from Jack (he switched my brand new gearknob with Matsu's used one, scratched the new surround and forgot to return my OEM gaiter - not very impressive) but it does look very nice.

Wouldn't recommend them for gaiters after this experience, but then I don't need anything else retrimming now...
