Trying to open my bonnet tonight for some screenwash, latch felt a bit tight, gave it a pull and it broke.

The lever is still attached and slight tension left in it but not much. No joy. Any ideas on a DIY fix? Or is it a VW job?

At VW and they are a bit lost, they say they'd need to book it in and may need to break the grill?! Carbon fibre one worth almost 700 quid : ( this is depressing.

There going to order in all the parts and try and rebook it. Booked today off work too. What a melt.

When you take the badge out you can see the catch and they were working at it but are afraid of hitting the radiator?

Help?!?

I cant help with experience on a mk5 but seems a bit drastic to break the grill?! Who cares about the rad you can get another one easy if its damaged but unlikely.

I'd say spray loads of wd40 in through the grill to the mechanism a bit if patience should sort it without breaking the grill, a rad is easily £300+

I think those are prone to breaking the little plastic mounting points for the cable by the lever
Have a look at that and try pulling on the cable with some pliers
