Can't say I'm that enthused over the quad pipes - doesn't seem right on a 4 pot.

It's also what the new S3 has and just makes it similar to the Audi - I hoped they would keep the 2 centre pipes in order to retain the R family identity.

They may as well call it a GTI-R.. Sir Henry has the right idea, get shot of the 4 pot and squeeze in the 3.6.. Thats real progression!!!

They did release a GTI R on the mark V shape, wif 400 or something bhp.
But think it was just a expermint tbh to prove it could be dun.

I'm underwhelmed to say the least. Sure 300bhp will be awesome but it just doesn't quite feel as special as the Mk4/5

As far as I can see its only the AWD that really sets it apart from the GTI and S3. Presumably they will all share the same engine but in slightly different levels of tune/boost?

EDIT: am I right in thinking the S3 actually has AWD in the form of quattro?

Yes, the S3 is AWD and uses Haldex like all VAG cars with transverse engine configurations.

I know there was the A3 3.2 that was effectively a MK4 but I still feel the Mk4/5 were a bit special compared to the rest of the hot hatches in that kind of area.

S3 is 300PS which is around 296bhp and as you say I expect the Golf R to have a little less inititially.
