Hi Guys,

Sorry for creating an off topic thread.

I was wondering if anyone as attempted rooting their android phone ?

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S running updated firmware 2.3.6 GINGERBREAD and over the years has become very slow and unreliable, even after a factory reset, and the phone comes with as you can imagine a silly amount of pre-installed useless applications, which i can only remove if the phone has been rooted.

If anyone could share any information and details / reliable sources which maybe you've personally had success with that would be spot on.

Thanks in advance and i appreciate any helpful replies.

Thanks for the reply guys, I was looking on the xda developers website and saw a full guide, but read up on people having issues.

The main reason why i wanted to do this was to remove most of the useless system applications, speed up the device aswell.

I wasn't to sure if all my contacts would remain, call and message system would all be ok, because i use my phone daily for both social and work.

Will rooting the phone and installing titanium backup (free version) be the safer method and work just as well ?

Mainly looking to remove pre-installed apps and stop the crashes/slow running and temperamental actions it sometimes has.

Will take a read of the above links provided, thanks for your help Silver

Thanks again Silver, i shall read more into it before deciding whether to go through with it or not.

The last thing i need is to have no phone, especially when it's i use daily for personal and work.

2. Put it to your phone's internal sd-card
3. Download ****
4. Put it to your phone's sd-card

Do i create a folder and place these 2 files in or do i just drag and drop.

All is going well at the minute, just come to a slight hiccup.

9. Install zip from sd-card
10. Choose zip from sd-card
11. Select cm-9.0.0-galaxysmtd.zip
12. Confirm
13. Wait
14. Wait more
15. Wait even more
16. Go back
17. Don't reboot
18. Install zip from sd-card

I am on number 15. the new OS has loaded, but i do not know how to GO BACK and install the next step without rebooting.

I skipped the first flash step because it said it i was running GINGERBREAD 2.3.6 and my build was XXJW4 i could move straight to root steps, ok i'm just going to reboot it now and install the second step.

Appreciate your help mate, you've been spot on.

UPDATE: Android upgraded.

That was rather fun, and scary at the same time. lol

If i'm interested in upgrading from cyanogenmod 9.0 to 10.0, i don't need to follow the root process again do i ? or do i just follow the ROM steps again and just install using the same method ? or do i need to do anything else before installing the new upgrade over cyangenmod 9.0 ?

Also, What's the latest version and what's the difference between cyanogenmod, jelly bean, honeycomb and ice cream sandwich, i'm looking for the smoothest, fastest, and a nice all rounder stable system.

Thanks Silver.

Just trying to get my head around some bits.

I installed the cyanogenmod along with another package gapps ics, I was not sure that if I upgrade to cyanogenmod 10.0 if I had to locate another package to install with it, I think I am getting confused with the whole build versions and os etc.
