Hello there everyone

Cant really find a list on here, but can you all help me out please!

Im wanting to know what things to look out for on a Mk5 as ive got a shortlist of 3 i want to look at sometime soon.

Are there any common problems (Not looking at DSGs) that i should look out for / avoid

Also what is the common mileage for a clutch to need to be changed, and cambelts etc etc

Many thanks

Danny

There are not really any common problems with them and just check the normal things you would check with any other car such as condition, service history etc.

Haldex service needs to be done every 40k miles and the R32 has a cam chain so no need to worry about cambelt changes

Oil and Filter, about £100 at a VW dealer, Just brought it up just incase you're looking at cars above or close to that mileage to make ure it's been done.

Good price that, and say a couple of hundred for a service then for the engine?

Seems a nice car to change to from my Focus RS, not half as quick (mines tuned to 340bhp) but still plenty fast enough, civilised, similar fuel costs, same insurance.

Im off to look at one monday

Look out for dodgy steering racks on the MK5......do slow full lock turns either way & listen for any unusual sounds or vibrations/grinding through the steering wheel.

Make sure its had at least 12 monthly oil changes too- long life servicing isn't gd for the V6 in the long run ;)

Thanks Dazm i shall give it a slow 3 point turn a few times!

So overall there not that bad then?

I spent 3k on my Car in 2 months, would rather not do the same again : )
Mk5's in general have very few problems, mainly DSG issues but your going manual.

As above really just look for for Haldex fluid/filter change @ 20k, brake fluid changes every 2 years, and yearly oil changes..........think VW recommend gearbox oil change @ 40k too.

Check the discs/pads/tyres too as these can be expensive to replace all in one go!

Haldex service is 40k miles on the MKV, which is different to the 20k miles for the MKIV
