Ok a mate from vw has managed to get me a refurbished rns510 b (customer wanted the kenwood in the end) now the question is I have a 56, does it need coding and I assume I won't need a canbus as this is the version ment for my year am I right?

The rns wasn't offered till 57 / 08 cars, but yes it can easily be fitted and coded up but here's the major problem you will either need to run modified firmware on the 510 or change your canbus gateway as it will drain your battery, your mate at VW should know this kind of thing!!

The canbus module is not the easiest thing to change but can be done. Mine was located behind a hatch hidden by the wiper motor. I had to remove the wipers, top part of firewall, plastic top cover, wiper motor assy, and then you can get to the hatch held on by two nuts. If you are going to the effort, install a polar fis+ at the same time.

This is what polar fis does! Handy bit of kit.

It's handy enough to get to your can gateway I done it in less than 30 minutes and there's a good write up on here by si-32!
