I know on the occasions I used to go to the Ring with my friends speed cameras were never a concern.

But what about these days, have any of you lot ever had a ticket through the post from the mainland?

Or run ins with the law, I have heard stories of people being escorted to cash machines and being relieved of 500 Euros.

I'm au fait with all the pinickety French rules regarding breath tests and high viz jackets etc etc.

Isn't it true the French don't let you have GPS with SAFETY camera detection these days?

Any advice appreciated guys, cheers!

That's true: http://www.theaa.com...-in-france.html

"Effective from 3 January 2012 French laws prohibiting drivers from carrying devices capable of detecting speed cameras have been extended to include devices able to warn or inform of the location of speed cameras e.g. satnav or gps systems capable of showing speed camera sites as PoI.

As well as now banning all devices capable of warning drivers of speed camera locations, the French government is installing around 400 new fixed speed cameras and is taking down road signs indicating the location of existing fixed speed camera sites."

I travel to spain 2 or 3 times a year going through France and always use my Tomtom with camera detection and my Road angle. I got pulled over last October for doing 124km in a 90km section near Limoges. I was only asked for my Licence and to pay a 90 euro fine. I got some paper work from the police and was told I could leave. He could see the Tomtom and Road angle in the screen and said nothing. However, I didn't see any camera, senor or van etc that tracked my speed but it was a fair cop as I was speeding. Most of the French speed anyway.

I'm going next week so I will see if anything has changed.

Cheers lads, am I right in thinking the Euro cameras are harder to spot?

@ Jimmy - Does your TomTom and the Road Angel tell you where they are? I have a Snooper SatNav which is great here in the UK.

The French camera's are grey, rectangular boxes that are about 1.5 mtrs tall. They sit very close to the carriageway. They did still have signs up late last year telling you the they were about. They aren't that hard to spot during the day but at night its a different matter. I have manged to see them about 1/4 of a mile away and sometime less. When you see 1 you'll know what I mean. They are on your side of the road. I have been flashed loads of times and nothing has ever happened. These are mainly found on A roads. When you see the camera sign they come up in about a mile or 2.

My Tomtom tells me where they are but the Road angle doesn't.The Tomtom has been very good both here in the UK and in France and I won't go without it. The Road angle is just handy for lasers as the French do use them.

I doudt the Frence would do much to you as it would be to much work for them. They would need to check your unit and prove it was on at the time. I'm always very sorry and have money in hand ready.

Oh, forgot to say that I have heard that they can now use your paige ticket as proof of speeding. Its marked with a time on when it was issued, so be aware.

You will love french roads, they are so much better than ours. No pot holes, smooth, no traffic and easy to use.

Quite coincidental to come across this post as I've just had two speeding tickets come through this week for incidents in June 2012 while visiting Italy. I mean I dont mind paying as I've done the crime...but wait for this, one is 182 EUR and the other one 562 EUR. I mean WTF...is this normal or is it that high because its taken the dumb wits several months to get a letter out to me?

I came back from the alps last year and my computer said id averaged a naughty speed when i got to calais! Didnt get anything through though.

You have to carry a breathalyser in france nowadays and a piece of camembert in the boot else risk a fine!

The gendamerie took an interest in the R32 leaving the mountains and asked for my details and then waved me on my way. They made a beeline for my car for some reason..i felt like jason bourne! :)

Cheers for the info boys, so do they mostly face you on the mainland?

I seem to remember speed cameras being hidden sway in the central reservations on the big roads, is that correct?
