Noticed today when pulling off drive that when i steer at very low speeds there is a groaning noise coming from the front of the car. Happens no matter which way i turn the wheel. Also occurs when i turn the wheel when car is stationary.

I did search on here and someone mentioned a similar problem was caused by a fault clutch in alternator and a new alternator sorted it out.

Any other possible causes? its not a clunking or clicking sound but a groaning noise, not even sure if normal as i had previous cars which had noisy PAS pumps but that was usually more towards full lock.

Ill mention it when taking to dealers tomorrow and if is something wrong get it done through warranty

I had a similar problem, turned out the power steering fluid was low because it was leaking through a poor connection on the fluid hose.

Is it especially in reverse at low speeds? And a twisting/groany/springy sound?

If so strut top bearings, very common, they're plastic!! Not too dear to change.

Took it in but they wanted to charge me for diagnostic, this was after loads of issues with VW extended warranty people who refused to put current warranty in my name :( so ive taken out a Warranty Direct monthly Policy to take over from extended one which seems really good. VW had the gall to refuse to change the names on existing one and then try and sell me it for another year.

Getting it looked at by a VW specialist on Thursday with regards to the creaking noise although im thinking the power steering issue could be problem as from what i could see it appears under the min mark.

Mines was in dealers today. Both top strut mount bearings u/s. I asked if this would cause the vibration when turning at parking speed and they said yes.

New strut top bearings cured the clunking sound but the groaning sound is still there. Dealer couldn't find anything to cause it. It's going back in next week for them to have another go.

Does no-one on here have this problem????

Mine is a MkV, but I had a creaking from the steering. Only happened when on an incline though, with a decent amount of lock.

VW changed the following (maybe not the correct parts names, my Japanese is limited)

Steering box
Steering Rack
2 caliper dampers added to front
changed 2 front suspension upper bearings and springs
Balance weight kit.

I think a lot of this was just fitted as troubleshooting.

Like I said, this is for my MKV. May help someone though.

JimmyCa69, Has your car been looked at yet? Give me something for dealer to look at when mine goes back in.

well it was in garage for last 2 days and ive been told the creaking is the top strut mounts so going to get them done as creaking annoying me now.

He did mention other causes before diagnosing, steering rack, ball joints, PAS fluid, forget the others.

Just re-read your other thread about the problem you having, ask them to check the steering rack definately, as when on full lock and you move the steering wheel side to side thats when you can see any excessive movement in the steering rack.

Might explain what your getting  keep us posted!
