For peace of mind I want to replace the whole chain and tensioners on my newly bought mk4 . Its done 90k and cant find any documentation on whats been changed and when if anything has been changed at all I would be surprised.. I live in Dover Kent so where would you go to have this work done and approx how much should it cost me?

Obviously it would be else to change the clutch to so it will cost around £1400 iirc.

There's guys on here running FI with way over 100k with no issues. I'm on 109k and have NO intention of doing the chains etc if its of any help :)

Cheers marra , ive got up this morning and started reading some horror stories on time chains and tensioners and then my over active mind has gone into overdrive and started thinking the worse . The engine sounds no different hot or cold and the only audible sound is the smallest tick tick. ...,*confused*

Ticking is normal, with any chain driven engine. Listen to a corsa c 1.0! 3 cylinders and a chain now that's a rattle. But in all seriousness it's as good as rare for the chains to go. If its got FSH don't worry

If you change the tensioners you might aswell do the chains. But again its not really necessary. Ive only read about 5 cars that have had the chains snap,

Im only in Whitstable dude, I will get mine done soon before going FI, thats the only reason.
My self and Roy will be using Jim, hes in margate but an awesome fella, and get all the chain and parts from EuroCanterbury tell Nathan in parts Doug and Roy sent you. if u decide u want them done, parts including will be about 450-500 quid, Jims labour be about the same
However the miles aren't a problem dude. and it been looked after i wouldn't worry, mine has cover 117k and she sweet still.

Also im part of a local Vag group forum and a few from Dover come up. Now if you join the forum http://www.vagingit.co.uk/index.php
come to our Costa coffee meets on Thursday evening(every other thursday) couple guys can measure your chain measuring blocks. they might really low stil just never know.

As said use just stock VW oil(longlife 3) it is just service it regularly, As said mind just not worry about the chains if she running all good.

Hope this helps

Cheers mate thats all good to know thanks for the info. I bought the car last week in middle of the morning and the only thing I didnt check was the headlights and guess what yep nearside headlight not working but double indicators do in the unit. No main beam or side lights and ive checked fuse 21 but that was all good.. But what part of the light is buggered the ballast , igniter, .. I've had an old scoobie classic for seven years and when your headlight was out on that it was a cheap bulb and that was that but this is another thing all together.. Has lots of advice and took it all on board but still confused where to go with it...

Hi mate im the Roy, Doug was talking about.. Im getting my chains done next Wednesday 10th April this is because ive had a light on the dash and it did say on vagcom it was the camshaft sensors but changed them and it wasn't, then had the blocks looked at when it went in for the coilpack recall and they said the chains might have stretched so now ive finally got the dosh to get them done
... as for the headlight unit I would go for bulbs first as the side light is separate from the main beam bulb .. I think the ballast etc is only for headlight bulb? they are a pain to get to and is poss if ya don't mind ya knuckles scrapped a bit or you can undo and pull ya bumper forward just enough to get at the lower bolts to get ya headlight out?

Hey Doug or Roy did you ever get your chains changed with the fella in margate as I'm gonna get mine done in the next few weeks. Just wanted to enquire how it all went and the cost really..
