Evening.

My front near side tyre has a cut in the sidewall. Given this is a 4WD, do I need to change all four at the same time or can I just change the front two? Possibly a daft question but I’m asking because a colleague with a BMW 4 Series Xdrive has gone through two transfer boxes and it’s apparently because he’s not changed all four tyres at the same time which somehow has caused wear on the drive train.

Thanks for humouring me! :)

You can just change the front pair. There is no requirement to change all 4 on a Haldex based AWD system. The R32 is not permanent 4WD, like the torsen diff based systems used in other cars.

Thank you, going to be expensive enough to pay for two new tyres and refurbish the kerbed alloy without having to stump up for two rears as well.
