LOZ has helped me with a few questions but I've got loads more. The wife is still after a vw California and wants to put a deposit on a pre reg one. She spoke to here accountant who told her she can't claim the vat back through her business because it has windows all round and its classed as a car? The sales guy at vw says if your accountant is creative he can get round it but our man says it won't work and all she can do is claim pence per mile. My argument with the accountant is its mainly going to be used as a work van and will have sign writing on it so what's the issue. Is he talking crap? Not sure if it matters but she's a limited company

We had similar issues with our fleet.

We looked into buying a 4x4 pickup Amarok/Ranger type vehicle but we were told that they are classed as cars as they have more than 3 seats so we couldn't claim the vat back. We also had an issue when we bought our transit crew cab van. The also classed that as a car at first! I can't remember what happened with that as my dad sorted it with the accountant!

But vans and cars are a minefield when purchasing through your business and then trying to claim the vat back! If your unsure just ask another accountant and see what they have to say!

Sorry I thought a California was different to what it is and that your wife had a driving specific job.

You can claim VAT on a car if it is exclusively for business and not available for private use by anyone (including employees). Otherwise if its classed as a car you will struggle.

If its classed as a car and she isn't doing a driving specific job then it needs to be 100% exclusively for business and never used privately by her or anyone.
