Ok folks, looking for some advice or help here.

Bought my mk4 r32 about 6 weeks ago,3 of that has been spent in a vw garage. I put the car in to get the timing chains checked and they have said they are fine, but whilst it was there they ran a diagnostics check because the epc light was on which I knew about,as I replaced the engine temperature control sensor but there is 2 t-peice hoses which are cracked so that's why the light has come back on. But anyways whilst running diagnostics it came up with fault code g201 which is the abs pump I think. Now the rear brake lights and handbrake lights aren't working nor does the abs but there are no lights on the dash displaying any of this, only when it was plugged into diagnostics did this show up.

It has come up with

**Motronic engine management system check

Event detected
po517 brake switch malfunction

**Abs/eel/asr/esp 4 motion mark 60

2 events detects
00526 brake light switch implausible signal
01435 sender 1 for Burke booster g201 implausible signal

**airbag system chck

1 event detected
00532 supply voltage too low

**all wheel electronics

1 event detected
Brake light switch implausible signal

Can someone please shed some light on this as I'm about tarring my hair out ,vw want £1800 to replace abs pump which still doesn't guarantee a fix,and no indication as to why brake lights won't work or there is no faults displaying on dash?! Furthermore the garage that sold me the car gave me a 3 month warrant but claim limit is £1000,so having spent £7000 on the car I don't see why I should have to fork out a small fortune

Thanks in advance derek

There will be plenty of 2nd hand abs pumps out there. Speeding close to 2k on a single part for a 10 year old car is ludicrous.

I wouldn't have let VW anywhere near it. There are plenty of specialists that will be a better job for half the price.
Where are you based? I recommend Stealth Racing if you are close to the midlands. People travel from all over the country to them for work.

SInce taking the car out this morning the esp light came on,would this be affected by the brake light switch? I am base in Oban, about 2 hours north of Glasgow. But also would the brake light switch cause all the fault codes ? This is what I'm not understanding and also why the lights are hardly ever on the dash?! Thanks for the response though guys! Much appreciated!

Yes the brake light switch can cause other problems...does you car have cruise control...if it does see if it works as a faulty switch also stops it working

No the car doesn't have cruise control , have ordered brake light switch will see if it cures it. Still don't understand why the lights are not displaying on dash but come up on diagnostics with the fault code for abs pump?! Also brake lights were working when I got the car but only stopped recently. Very strange . Thanks again for replies!!

Can anyone shed some light on this? I know a car has to have a 3 month warranty if bought from a trader but i hadn't heard the limit was £1000 is this something unique to this garage or is this accross the board?

Good Luck getting the problem resolved mate, Fingers crossed its just the switch

Yeah 2678Andy I think it's more the warranty company the trader uses, mine is a scotsure warranty, I get £1000 claim limit but up to the value of the car in the 3 months. I think it just depends on what the trader wants to spend. The more you get with the warranty the more expensive it is!! Hope that helps mate.

If the brake light switch does not cure it try the MAF, as when that goes the computer says everything is broke

Id say it sounds like the brake light switch, basically how it works is when the pedal is pressed, the switch is pushed down which makes the connection to make all your lights work. I had one go on my old mk4 tdi, there isnt a light on the dash for it, so on my diesel the glow plug light came one to warn me and im sure I read at the same time in cars with the epc light, that comes on. Get the part from tps or look on ebay for a seller than is a VAG group dealer as often sell on ebay and are genuine parts. I recently got a new xenon range sensor from a skoda dealer on ebay, cheapest I found anywhere.

As mentioned I wouldnt let VW near it, find a recommended VW specialist and one that knows the R32 well.

I don't know if it's any help, but my Mk5 R32 had the G201 sensor fault come up, resulting in the ABS pump needing to be replaced. I done some googling and found out that a fault signal / technical bulletin had been released by VW on these, so with this gave them a call and got the ABS unit changed for a new one free of charge. Was earlier this year so pretty recent.
