Does anyone know if this is actually smoked glass or a film thats applied at the factory? I've just noticed that one of my rear windows is smoked and the other isnt. I assume that at some point in its history its had a break in but I've had it for four years and only just noticed.

mk5 I presume?

Factory tinted glass is actually a dark green coloured glass. no aftermarket tinting there

if the glass isn't matching in colour then yes probably had a replacement glass on at some point, and sadly the colour doesn't match.

Yes, its a mk5. The passenger side is just clear class, its a VW part number though so not sure why they didnt match it up. Dont suppose you know if its a dealers job or do Autoglass do it?

it should have blue tint glass as standard.
Maybe it's glass from a non R version ie breakers
Anyone should be able to do it.

Depends what year MK5 it is. Early MK5s have a blue tint and from MY07 the standard tint changed to green.

As said above the optional rear privacy glass is darker glass, not a film.

I stand corrected - although i'm sure mine is blue tint with MJ07
... but then i haven't seen it in months and cant actually remember!!

Maybe at "model enhancement" (cost saving time) or MJ08 they made it green!

It could have been from MY08 but it sticks in the back of my mind as my car was a MY06 and remember being happy my car was built before the changes. Being from the west coast of Scotland, the difference between blue and green is very important:)

The glass is a dark green as some have mentioned, When my rear windscreen shattered i mentioned it had a blue tint to the glass, I didnt want a privacy window but they assumed it was a tinted glass. They brought a tinted rear windscreen down this did not have a film on at all it was the actual glass that was dark and tinted.

I then mentioned that it is not the right one so they went and got the correct blueish tint glass
But to answer your question from factory it will have a tint, No film is used.

Okay, thanks. I'll give autoglass a ring tomorrow and see how much it would cost to replace it with the correct item. If its something horrific it may be cheaper to have all the rears tinted using film so that they match.

Also worth speaking to TPS to get a price for the correct glass to compare with the autoglass price and see what autoglass or another company would charge to fit.

If you give TPS the VIN or reg number when registered they will supply the glass as it came from the factory.

Just to give you an idea,

As my rear screen was replaced, The fitting charge for remove and rebond on the rear screen was something like £8 0, They use this fish wire to remove it and its pretty easily done on the MK5 surprisingly even with the spoiler.

The price of the blueish glass tint was something like 280-300, The standard privacy tint window was something around 120-200 he mentioned the blueish tint glass was very pricey as opposed to a standard factory tint one.
