Finally got the car to the stealers to investigate a vibrating / grinding noise from the rear when turning at slow / parking speeds. Bearing in mind the car has only 15500 miles I'm told the rear Haldex unit is shot and it needs replacing.:( Better still, at a cost of just over £2,500 as the cars out of warranty. I contacted Volkswagen UK, explained the situation that this is not down to wear and tear, but they're not interested in contributing to the cost of a replacement. :angry:I've now put a written complaint to VW but I'm not holding out for much of a response.
Basically I'm f****d if they don't help, either I cough up £2,500 for a new replacement or I'm phoning breakers to find a second hand unit. What a load of s**t.

I don't understand how a haldex unit can be shot when it's only done 15.5k? Somethings off there, the whole thing can't be kaput, surely if there is a problem then is it not like a gearbox that can be opened a new cog put in and put back together. That might be a cheaper option if you can get a specialist to do it?

Get a second opinion, VW are always out to make more money out of you, they're very fond of replace rather than repair!

As db7 says always get second opinion! Especially when you're talking that that sort of money! Are you anywhere near a specialist? I'd try them next over another stealer.

Good luck mate, I feel for you.

Dude,

i'd try one of the specialists on here, JBS may be able to help you, i know whenever i get a fellow R32oc.com member in the shop they always get treated and respected properly, if VW havent told you the whole story or suggested an alternative then maybe JBS can.

Give em a go, it cant hurt, i'd be loathed to shell out to VW, they're a bunch of bandits at the best of times when it comes to spares and repairs. Also, speak to Wayne, r32oc.com creator, i KNOW he has big ties in with VW racing. Worth a shot and he's a top bloke to, always watching over his members with a nurturing eye.

Cheers for the support and responses to this thread fellas. Contacted a few breakers today but nothings turned up yet, I'm definitely a bit dubious of buying a second hand part anyway. Contacted two specialists today just for a second opinion. Both suggested having a Haldex filter and fluid change first to see if this alleviates the problem as a cheaper first option. I'll contact JBS and Haldex head office tomorrow, maybe they can shed some light.
Hopefully VW will respond constructively to the letter I've written. When I initially phoned them about the fault you wouldn't believe the excuses they were pulling out the hat as reasons not to contribute to the repair costs.
I really can't see how this has happened, the part must have been a dud when the car was first manufactured. I'm told the part is a non repairable item, when there f****d there f****d, they can only be serviced with filter and fluid change.
I think if VW stiff me again, it's a trip to a specialist for a second opinion and hopefully a cheaper diagnosis.

I was just speaking to Luke at Volkswagen Racing (or Racing Line as they're mainly known) and he said he's only ever known of one Haldex go on their race cars but that was from sheer abuse and they replaced it. He said like others have said and to change the oil first, it may just be old oil and if the cars low mileage then the Haldex may not have been used that much for the oil in it to circulate properly :)

i know meachanic at vw and he said they've replaced a few haldex units but this was thought to be due to people not keeping up with the oil and filter change on them. seen as yours has only done 15k it is even due one yet!! i actually have a spare haldex rear diff. contact me if your interested mate. was guna put it in my mk1 :)

Wow, I never expected to source a diff that quick, amazing support fellas. There's some PM's for rob_watti and eatthisvr6 on the way.
Unbelievable that a group of fellow owners can be more helpful and supportive than the manufacturer that produces the car.

Hope you get this one sorted fella. I've not noticed an oil leaking but it does make a hell of a racket, vibrates the whole inside of the car.
