Possibly a stone stuck between the disc and the backing plate.

Hmmm, not too sure about that. it gets louder the faster i drive, i think it could be a bearing, whether its a wheel bearing or a bearing on the driveshaft?????? We shall see
I've had a stone stuck twice on the rear and the noise was pretty loud. In fact the first time it happened I was expecting the propshaft to be trailing along the ground when I got out.

Unless you've hit a pot hole and the bearing has collapsed, bearings tend to get louder over time and the noise varies when you go round corners as the bearing is loaded and unloaded.

Good luck anyway and let us know what it ends up being.

i will admit i thought the bearing only made a noise when you turned a corner depending on what side it is. i am told by my mate at VW that its sounds like a bearing on the driveshaft but obviously he wont know until it goes in on Wednesday. If it is something as random as a stone i will be a happy man!!

A bearing noise would be more of a rumbling sound & sometimes you'll feel a vibration through the wheel... Jack the car up, pop the wheels off & take a look around the back of the disc, in the calliper top & bottom & between the disc shield & disc... Could be like the boys have said.. Possible stone caught up in there..?
Other possible cause is a leak on the box & low gearbox fluid..? But I guess you'd notice any oily patches on your drive/garage floor & a stiffer gear change!!!

I've had stones caught in disc brakes before and they come out simply by reversing a few yards

i totally forgot to update the post
the noise was the drivers side wheel bearing in the end.
£25 for the bearing
£60 to fit it
then the bearing having been on there for 10 years had ceased
my mate had to rip off the track rod end and replace that ........
£20 for new track rod end
total bill .............. because he is a true pal .................. £50.00

i know! im not dure what he was thinking either!

Glad you sorted dude, I'm surprised you didn't feel it through the steering though...
