Hi All

Just had the PRNDS flash of death and had to drive 60 miles home in first gear.

Took to dealers and they say £5k for new gearbox fittedI

a FSH 2006 Mk5 R32  so only worth about 5k

They did offer a wiring check for a couple of hundred quid but VW had recommended replacement due to age etc etc

So at a cross roads as had car since new

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place

Whats the breakers/auction value of an R32 with non functioning gearbox ?

Asked them to investigate scrappage scheme if I could make a valid claim against it

Any other thoughts ?

fcuk, sorry to hear that. There must be independent places that can sort it out for less than £5k

I would get a second opinion from someone who is familiar with DSG, It's more than likely the gearbox can be repaired and if not a second hand one can be fitted.

Get it scanned by someone other than VW. There are places that refurb mechatronic units if it's possible to do so for much cheaper. That or you can get a second hand one.

There are a lot of specialists in re-manufactured gearboxes at prices around 9-1K but as often the case it's your mechatronic unit that's probably at fault and there are a lot of companies specialising in these items. Here's one I came across but it's worth checking any company for feedback from clients.

Depends if the nature of the fault is electronic or hydraulic, the first being a lot easier/cheaper to sort. Maybe worth giving these guys a shout - http://www.ecutestin...earbox_ecu.html

I sent my mechatronic unit to them and after waiting 5 days rather than the 3 quoted was told it couldn't be repaired so the A3 was broke thankfully I used some of the bits on my mk5
