Noisy Diff

Hi Guys, I recently bought a mk4 r32, noticed a droning/whining sound from back. Most noticeable at low speeds 30-50mph. Seems very constant. Bit more pronounced during decelerating. Also can feel a bit of judder feedback through brake pedal at same time. It's my first R and i'm not dead familiar with haldex/diff/4motion etc.

Any ideas??

Thanks:

How old is your car? How many miles on it?
Haldex/oil will not make it whine it will just not engage very well when asked to. I have already replaced the haldex oil and filter and had this additional whine as well.....checked my diff oil yesterday and it was low..diff had 72k miles on it ...drained the diff out and refilled to the filll plug till it dribbles out.....

Cheers for the replies, pretty sure it's not the exhaust. Sounds a bit like wheel bearing noise but it's fairly constant. Suppose it sounds a bit like i've got an electric motor in the back.

Haldex coupling sounds expensive, is that part of the differential assembly?
Ye its inside the diff

Id say get your wheel bearings checked

Also what wheels do you have, i Has set of bbs CH 19'' wheels on mine usd to drone because of very little tyre, i have 18'' anniversary wheels now the drone has gone ever since D

Thanks, Car is 2003, 50000 miles, service due around now. Is it easy to tell if haldex engaging or not? Are there warning lights? Presumably the haldex will only engage when front wheels begin to spin, will it? My noise is most noticeable when there is no drive at all, ie when foot is off the pedal.

For diff oil replacement can i do it on axle stands or does the car need to be level?

Sorry to ask so many questions but i've just bought the car, absolutely love it, but am paranoid theres something wrong.

sounds about right....haldex will engage when when it senses loss of grip from the front wheels.....it also plays with the active stability control.....the noise from the diff will normally happen on the over run i.e. you lift off when the gears are not under load. Yes you can do the diff oil its very easy with axle stands....while its up you can check the wheel bearings just to be on the safe side.....when its off the floor take the handbrake off hold each wheel turning them slowly and hold top and bottom wobble it to you and back to you it should have 2-3mm of play anymore than that the bearings might be worn....diff oil drain plug is bottom of the diff case from the back of the car its on the right of the diff.....the fill plug is on the front of the diff half way up and forward of the drain plug. The diff should take about 2litres of fluid....the best things to get are the 1L bottles with the long spout to get it in to the fill plug. Let me know if you have anymore questions :)

Just been out in car on super smooth road. Noticed that noise does get higher pitched at higher speed. Noise is also the same whether i'm in a gear or coasting in neutral. Noise is also a bit more pronounced under braking, (bit more of a rumble though with rumble feedback through brake pedal). I'm now not totally convinced it's from the rear, it's difficult to tell.

I hope it's only wheel bearings.

Worried that it's nasty;- gearbox/diff. Although gearbox feels lovely, best i've ever driven.

Sorry I have a question too regarding the diff,

I noticed when I drive off sometimes and pull out of the drive, when on or near full lock I feel/hear a griding or rubbing noise, its like the tyres dont like full lock turning at slow speeds, any idea`s?

Also do yo know where to get that ETKA for a MKiV .:R32

Cheers :trytofly:

I don't think it should be buts its quite easy to get hold of on eBay, I think I might have a copy at home actually.

download utorrent and search for etka 7 or 7.2 torrent on google ;)

the noise when turning maybe a dry/worn cv joint turn the lock one way fully and get someone to listen to both wheels while you drive slowly forward....you will also be able to hear it in the cabin but they should be able to pin point which wheel....

also don't forget there is alot of turning items on the car making noise.....4 wheels...4 drive shafts.....prop shaft with bearing under the handbrake...gearbox...transfer box and rear diff as well....
