It isn't that rare a problem. Unfortunately the fix isn't easy as the rear spoiler needs to be removed to get at it. To remove the spoiler the dealer uses something like a cheese wire and then has to rebond it back on when it's fixed.

I've seen a few people say that the dealer has made a bit of a hash of the rebonding and paintwork so choose your dealer carefully.

does that mean if you wanted to replace it, would require spoiler off? i've noticed condensation in mine ;-(

Mines stopped working but Iv just left it because I dont trust the dealer to get it right.

 

My MK5 GTI has just developed a problem with the 3rd Brake Light, which has just stopped working. I could n't believe that VW wanted to charge in the region of £400 to complete the job.

I purchased a replacement LED light from VW yesterday for £39 and have fitted it today, by following the method below. Light is now working fine and no damage to the car, what so ever, so I am really pleased. In total, it took me 25 minutes to complete. Excellent saving on VW's costs.
