ive upgraded my sidelight bulbs to pure xenon bulbs (£15 of ebay) also i have uprated my headlight xenons from 4200k (oem) to 8000k real deep blue and twice as bright these were also off ebay (£45 for the pair) have a look at the pics thread you will see the sidelights dont go for those you have seen for 3 quid they are crap..
if i get chance later i will post the item numbers off both

yes they are 4200k from the factory in every uk oem car i have been a fan off aftermarket hid,s now for over 3 years and would never use halogen bulbs ever again!! if you saw my headlight bulbs you would love them...
ive uprated my friends gttdi to xenon sidelights xenon main beam and xenon high beam the light shows are awesome.

ok thanks for that. I know standard headlamps of MK 5 golfs have the 501 type bulbs, so judging by the part number of H6W, this is a type thats used on MK 5 Xenons?

ahh well if you know for sure they are 501 sidelight bulbs then the link i gave you is the wrong ones but if you go into the sellers list you will find hundreds of the 501 bulbs..
mk4 r32 baynet type sidelight bulbs
mk5 r32 blade type sidelight bulbs
also if you are wanting to upgrade your headlight bulbs then dont go any higher than 8000k and the bulb type you need is ds2 (thats if the mk5 uses the same bulb as the mk4):withstupid:

I bought some led sidelights from aceparts.com, someone on here made a thread about it, and the bulbs were on offer so it'd be rude not to. They are a little whiter/bluer than the dipped xenon beam though. I've also changed the D2S xenon bulb to a pure white 5000k set, which have absolutely no tinge of yellow like the 4300k's do. Took 5 minutes each side to fit.

I'd recommend not changing the xenon D2S bulb to anything higher than 5000k. After this you actually lose useable light. The bulbs are 4300k for a reason. Also 8000k temp will produce lots of glare for oncoming traffic and it's actually far less bright than the OEM Philips bulbs despite what people may think.

 

Do these bulbs come as a kit with the ballasts and wires or is it an actual bulb? like for like replacement?

 

its like for like replacement you take your xenon bulb out and insert the new one

i can see what your saying here but i think you are getting these mixed up with the aftermarket xenon kits ie ballasts and bulbs (25 watts)
these do dull off and glare
the replacement bulbs for the r are bulb only and run from the cars 35 watt units 6000k is the brightest (pure white) 8000k is as bright but has a blue tinge to it exactly the same bulb as mercedes use
ive been using these after market kits for 5 years now and have experimented with all makes and manufacturers...
ive got 8000k in mine and my pal has 5000k in his and mine are brighter

 

I think you need to read up on xenons and how they work. All manufacturers use 4300k-4600k Osram or Philips D1S/D2S/D3S bulbs from the factory.

Contrary to popular belief Mercedes don't - and probably never will - use 8000k bulbs, they might appear bluer because of the projector lens at certain angles, but I assure you they will be no more than 5000k in colour temperature. 4300k provide the most usable light, 5000k is pure white not 6000k.

not even gona argue come see for yourself proofs in the pudding and i have it in my car.. open up a merc headlight and look what it says on the bulb the reason i know this is my pal has a c36 amg and wanted to upgrade to 8000k so he took his bulbs out to find he had wasted his time.....
im even prepared to put a standard bulb back in one side of my car (4200k) and show the difference... climefish on here will aslo vouch this..

LED side lights won't work in the mk5. We tried a set in my friends mk5 R32, and the car immediately shuts off power to them, and pings up a warning light on the dash.

Stuck some regular blue tinted 501 bulbs in afterwards, and although whiter, they weren't a huge improvement.

Personally I dont think it's a major deal on the mk5. The sidelights are very unnoticable next to the powerful Xenons

I'm willing to bet my car that Mercedes themselves don't use 8000k bulbs. No manufacturer does, they are all 4300-4700k from the factory. I don't know where your mate bought his car from, but have you ever considered that maybe the previous owner might have been a smart-arse too and changed the bulbs to 8000k thinking they were brighter?

So if 8000k are so great why don't VW/Audi/BMW/Mercedes/all the others put them in from the factory? There's a reason why, and that reason is because they provide less useable light. Have a read of this link to see why manufacturers use the bulbs they do, you never know you might learn something!

If you actually bothered to read up about it, you'd see I was right, but that's obviously beyond you. Have fun with your 'OEM' 8000k's which are better than the 4300k's which Osram & Philips have spent millions on developing, but you probably know more than them, eh? :smokin:

 

LEDS will work with a resistor in paralell with them. I havnt bothered as i quite like the contrast. but ive used the resistor method in other mkvs without issues.

I was under the impression that all car manufacturers used the same colour bulbs (4300k is considered the safest) so i would be surprised if anybody used 8000k. I wouldnt go any higher than 6000k and when i do change them i will be going for 5000k prob.

 

ahh ok smartass you may have a point there some1 may have already changed them but he did buy it brandnew... but on the flip side he did import it from germany as there laws are different..
one thing i do know for sure is that the usage of 4200k bulbs in the uk is for the colour ratio
anyways im happy with the quality and efect i have in my car so there!!

8000K bulbs may look brighter than 4300K but as CESC says - 4300K provide the most usuable light.

I had 6000K bulbs in my last car, and am not overly convinced that they were brigther than my OEM bulbs.

 

5000k & 6000k are a good compromise eliminating the yellow tinge you get on the factory 4300k whilst still giving you a good amount of useable light. They shouldnt be any brighter. Just a different colour and the bluer light tends to give off a fair bit more glare to oncoming drivers instead of lighting up the road.

I had 8000k in one of my previous cars and found lane driving extremely difficult sometimes. Put 6000k in and it was much better (very little difference from the standard). Car passed MOT with both in though.

I have no idea how some people can drive with the 16000k bulbs that are around. I did find that spotting the emergency services became easier with the 8000k bulbs though.

 

Even 6000k bulbs are defeating the point of having xenons. The HID's are for safety not cosmetic purposes and at 6000k the bulb produces 2400 lumens of light compared to the 3200 of an OEM 4300k. In comparison 8000k only produces 2000 lumens of light, this is not that much better than a standard halogen.

Personally, I think 5000k is the most I'd ever go for as it is the closest colour to natural daylight and eliminates all the yellow tinges from a tired D2S bulb. There's a guy on eBay selling a pair of new 5000k bulbs for £30.

I've heard of 30,000k xenon kits before. God only knows what that would look like.
