hi try the connection but it sounds like the ballast unit on the back of the light has had it

 

Thats the igniter located withi the headlight housing. Had exactly the same thing on my MK4 and i tried everything. Replaced the headlights in the end!!

 

Cheers guys that's a big help, sounds expensive don't suppose you know rough cost of either the ballast or the igniter? Trying to avoid going to vw

for a new one from a vw bora, strangely vw don't list one for the golf, but the bora one fits. Everyone that has fitted one says it's a nightmare as u have to solder it in

 

That's supposed to say £ eighty pounds

 

I found the Bora one to have to short leads. And it is possible to change em without any soldering (not sure if soldering is adviced since we are talking 1000 + volts going through those leads) Check this thread dude for correct Bosch igniter part number=

Ah that's handy, so you can buy just the igniter?

 

Yes, just search on "1 307 329 079 or 1 307 329 059" on ebay and you'll see a few; they are around £ 70. I have not changed mine yet as it has worked lately; but as you see from the thread I linked to people like PREDATOR_R32 & JASONGTR on here has changed theirs.

 

I took my headlight off and looked at the where the igniter was. You get sod all wiring to be able to solder anything to it.

It's right inside the housing so unless you've got hobbit hands you ain't got a chance.

Easier to buy 2nd hand xenons off eBay.

 

I got some MK4 xenons if people need one or both.

 

My headlights are like candles could this be the same thing?

 

Afternoon guys, thanks for all the help. Found out is the headlight control unit, is that basically the igniter?
If so dose any one have one or know anyone who might be breaking one? Vw quoted £486 fitted! Feel violated!

If it is number 4 on the drawing it is your ballast. Then you are lucky; they are easy to change. Search for "7M3 907 391" in ebay.

 

ive changed them before....you need to move the headlight adjusters all the way back to make the opening bigger to allow for the red connector to pass....its not that hard tbh....but must admit, pretty bad design from VW....

 

Interesting. Maybe it will be obvious when I open my headlight to change the ignitor, but just in case in advance: how do you move the adjusters to gain the space needed? Have to loosen something, or adjust them somehow? Thanks.
